It all depends on the types of zombies, if they go resident evil type (super zombies) we're ****ed no matter what we do because they will defy all logic and get you.

If its brainless, clumsy, slow, DEAD zombies, I agree up north/south into frigid lands would be a good idea...if you knew what you were doing, half a million people would freeze to death once they got the idea in their heads to travel to one of the poles. Food would also be a problem unless your an excellent ice hunter.

In said situation I would grab a uhaul truck and after loading as many supplies from varies stores (possibly my own house too) I would drive to one of the older houses in the area, with at least a second story and destroy the stairway after creating a rope ladder/alternate means of getting up/down.

I personally believe 'up' would be better because food would become a problem, I could possibly plant a makeshift garden on a balcony for extra supplies in the time to come.

Lastly we get to the brain evolving zombies....Yeah...probably ****ed in this situation too unless you have some kind of ultra base.

If I could prepare a base and had alot of money (and a factual knowledge zombies would strike during my time I would create a colloseum of sorts, there would be a 15 foot tall, 1.5-2 feet thick wall around probably....fifth-teen acres of land and most of it good farmland, stocked with seeds, weapons and supplies, of course as I do not have a ton of money or a factual knowledge that the zombies will attack while i'm still alive I believe I won't be doing this sadly, If only if only....

Of course the farmland would be automated by a new type of energy that never ever ever runs out ^^ as if I'd get off my lazy *** and do some real work, Hah

In my opinion, the ideal protection against zombies would be on a reasonably sized island in a fast-moving river, with walls along the upstream side to prevent zombies from washing downstream and being able to climb onto the island. There would have to be some means of reaching the shore, possibly a series of stepping stones which would make it easy for a human to cross but which would wash any clumsy zombies downstream. With a decent food supply and possibly a garden if the island was big enough, this location would virtually guarantee a complete lack of zombies and a relatively easy means of escape. It would also be far less expensive than other proposed fortresses; the only limitation is finding the right spot.
