My top 3 picks for close range anti-zombie weapons.
First, the ninjato. Several people here have said that the ninjato is a stabbing sword rather than a cutting sword. They're wrong. I personally own a Hanwei Forge Practical Ninjato. It IS a CUTTING sword. The blade is razor sharp all the way from the tip to the hand guard. Don't take my word for it, go to Youtube and look up Hanwei ninjato. Its cutting power is off the charts!
Second, the entrenching tool. A razor sharp, collapsible shovel capable of chopping a zombie's skull clean in half with one swing! My 3rd choice is a tie between what I consider to be the 2 best overall bludgeoning weapons, the war hammer and the greenstone mere. Both weapons have incredible skull crushing power (FAR more effective than a common baseball bat), and both are relatively small and manageable (at least as far as bludgeoning weapon go). Of the two, the war hammer is the more powerful, while the mere is lighter and easier to handle.

I wouldn't count on the advice given in Max Brook's book too closely. Alot of his knowledge is false- like the the spade crap. A good example is where he talks about the M16 being a bad choice because it's full auto (it's selective fire and can be shot semi) and how you would have to adjust the front site post everytime a target changes range. I don't know who told him that- once you zero, that post isn't touched.

It seems like a kind of stupid weapon to me. You really would have to be skilled to use it effectively. Like oh, say a shaolin monk who spent years training in its use. For gods sake, if you want an effective weapon, get a $10 machete. Africans and central americans have been using them for decades for everything up to and including genocide. If it works for them, then it'll work against zombies. If the Shaolin spade was a practical weapon, then I dare say you'd see a hell of a lot more of it, but do you? No, but you see machetes all over the place. If the damn thing had a use outside of some pretty dancing kung fu, then Wal-mart would sell them.

I just have to ask what the hell is with everyones obsession over the shaolin spade . People say it is the perfect weapon to use to fight the zombies with because Max Brooks recommended it in his books . People want to use a weapon that is not readily available , requires training to use effectively and requires that you be somewhere that allows you to swing this long weapon around you without the zombies crowding in on all sides . Plus based on its appearance I think that it would take multiple strikes from this weapon to decapitate a zombie and while you are focused on one zombie it would give the other zombies the opportunity to help you shuffle off this mortal coil .

One weapon that hasn't really received that much attention is the spear . If you are actively hunting down and killing zombies in your region a spear could be a very good choice . It would need to be like a boar spear but with an extra wide catch a few inches behind the blade to prevent the zombie from simply sliding down the shaft and getting you . You could pin the zombie to something (wall , tree , car or the ground ) and then one of your team members could come up and dispose of it or you could stab it in the neck and sever the spine paraylising it or you could stab it in the head and pierce the brain .

Well, my cold steel kukri machete that I've had for 2 years has gone through some major brush clearing, camping, and lot of chicken butchering and I've only sharpened it twice. When I first got it I had to reprofile the blade, and I got it shaving sharp, then I touched it up just because I was bored and was sharpening my other knives at the time. I've chopped some 2.5-3 inch diameter limbs off in one whack with that thing, cleared fence rows, and lots of other stuff and I have been majorly impressed with it.
