The 8 Worst Places To Be When A Zombie Outbreak Occurs

Certainly you cannot avoid any and all places that would offer an obstacle to survival. However, if you frequent any of the locations on this list, you might want to consider your plan for survival. With that in mind, there are certain places that are worse than others to find yourself in during an outbreak of the undead. In no particular order of importance or ranking, here are the top 8 places you do not want to get caught in when the zombie outbreak occurs.
- Amusement Park/Tourist attraction: There are just far too many obstacles and not enough resources to sustain a large scale attack. Also, and more importantly, there would be mass confusion. Unless it is a theme park or tourist attraction that you are very familiar with, finding exits, getting to your car, and getting out of the parking area will be quite the challenge.
- Shopping Mall: Shopping malls and centers are not always a bad idea, however, there are many entries and exits to consider. Once the undead make their way inside, it could become extremely difficult to fend them off enough to make a stand. While you might be able to lock off and secure a single store, it might not be the best place to make your temporary location.
- Parade: Simply due to mass confusion, like that of an amusement park. Though the scene would be hectic, you could make it to your vehicle quicker than if you were at an amusement park. Still, there are numerous people and crowds can become unsafe once chaos takes the reigns.
- Arena/Sporting Event/Concert: Finding your way out of a panic-filled arena is one thing. Finding your way through thousands of people who are also fighting the undead is another. With people everywhere and chaos in control, you also risk injury from the living, no reasonable access to a weapon supply, or areas that are easily defendable.
- Cruise Ship: While the ship has plenty of supplies to last the short term, should an outbreak happen on the boat, there are limited places to run and/or defend, unless you and your team feel strong enough to throw them off the boat. If the outbreak happens on land while the boat is away, it might be difficult to find a safe place to dock. Docking a large cruise ship is not a quick and simple process, much less having to worry about drawing attention to yourself. You might not even be aware of the outbreak level and zombie population at your docking point.
- Library: The single advantage is that a library is typically quiet, so if something were to go down, you would surely know about it. However, with the rows of books, groups of people, lack of supplies, and entry/exit areas, the library is not the best place to be when an outbreak occurs.
- Movie Theater: If you are watching a movie, chances are the new sound systems will blare out anything happening outside of the building. If anything serious happens in the lobby, you might be able to hear the screaming. However, you have two choices, face the lobby or face the parking area. Exits are limited and the rooms are not at all equipped for proper defense.
- Hospital: While there are many potential weapons, safe areas, and means of escape, there are also many potential undead waiting to attack. With multiple floors to possible navigate and also having to deal with numerous panicking people who are already on emotion overload, the hospital can be a tough spot to dig your way out of.
You might be wondering to yourself: “why did the cemetery not make the list?” Again, Hollywood has warped our minds into believing that many of the dead rise from the grave. While it is true that the newly buried might have a stronger chance at once again walking the Earth, they are not coordinated or strong enough to break through the casket and make their way through the ground. Other bodies that have been buried longer will have been decomposed to the point where even if reanimated, they would not pose a serious enough threat. Which has to make you wonder… is a cemetery actually a safer place?
Lastly, we are certainly not advocating the complete avoidance of these locations. These hot-spots should only drive you to fine tune your plans so that when the outbreak occurs, you will be ready no matter what.
Stay safe. Stay informed. Stay alive.

Haha, the Library at my school is one of the first places I would run. It is five stories with arrow slit windows and the only stairs up beyond the second floor are behind easily barricaded doors. It is also a hop, skip, and a jump away from the Resident Dinning Hall, which has a small treasure trove of canned goods. My school is also built like a military installation(minus the fences). We have a six foot berm running around the buildings with only a few paths through them. And a large tower in the middle of the campus. Everything is made of concrete, so it does get a bit dreary. Good spot overall though, at least for the short term.

I think a government high school would be bad place as well because you know that at least initially, the government is going to try to lock down the school and not let anyone leave. Who knows how far they’d take this. Would they shoot you if you tried to escape? Maybe not at first, but what if panic takes hold and zombies start showing up and you’re trying to escape out a window. I’d hate to be in a government school nad having their idea of a zombie plan forced upon me, especially if my family had a better one, which is highly more likely.

personally on the other end of this the first place i would want to be if zombies attack is wal mart, plenty of food clothes guns and ammo the only problem is defending its entrances but i think there would be plenty of other non zombies to help me.

I went to a school that was designed to be a prison. No joke. It was also right next to the CIA headquarters. If zombies did attack, I’d go there. It’s a bit far from me now, though.

You’re driving along and come to a long, deep tunnel leading to a major city. It passes beneath a river or granite ridge.
About 3/4 of the way through, you hit the packed cars of the fleeing masses. Wrecked cars and carnage. Traffic from behind soon blocks you in.
Elsewhere, a group of survivors in full panic-flight cause a fire at a relay station. The ensuing explosions wipe out many survivors, and zombies.
Back in your car, all you know is that the lights have just gone out.

Cities are by far the worst places to be in an outbreak. The population is simply too dense; even a city of 10,000 posts great odds against your survival - and a city like Chicago or New York are out of the question. You may have supplies, but you won’t last long.
Get out of the city. Get to a rural area, preferably in a plains state, with natural defenses (think cliffs or natural rock walls).

Worst place: airplane
If a zombie outbreak occurs there, you’re fucked. If it doesn’t, you’re still fucked because you’ll have no place to safely land a commercial jet.
A private, small plane might be safe because you could fly to a rural area. But that assumes you find out about the outbreak in flight.

C’mon, this list is completely ignoring the worst possible place to be in a zombie attack. Casino. They’re crowded, there’s very few exits, rows of slot/video poker/whatever machines would make movement difficult, and you’re probably already drunk so your judgement will be shot (if it’s vegas anyways).

I think I would want to avoid strip-clubs. If a zombie outbreak did occur, all strippers would instantly turn into zombies. Because aren’t they all just dead inside anyway?
Christhebetter on 17 Feb 2008 at 10:32 pm #
lol, like that last stripper comment…what about a nuclear submarine and/or nuclear powerplant. Barricades would be available, but neither have many exits, and the potential for zombies pressin a button and making everything glow green does exist.

I would go to a Walgreens or a CVS or similar box store. Maybe not to stay permanently, but it’s a good central fort for a sizable group of people.
1)Parapet roof accessible by internal ladder and ledge windows 12 ft above ground.
2)Pharmacy might be a raid target, but most won’t contemplate the long term nutritional assistance of vitamins. Pharmacy window bulletproof.
3)A small amount of semi-perishable food for a crowd. Beef jerkey for traveling.
4)Small truck entrance, and garbage ejection shredder in the back.
5)One fortifiable corner entrance at ground level. Interior is modular.
6)Lots of shopping carts around for barricade materials & hardware section on aisle 6.

the CVS is good so are some super markets like Kroger and other typs if you have a small to mid sized group if a large one look at a sams club, bjs or cosco that would be a nice place to go

A well designed chicken coop is perfect. my dads is the bomb(shelter) its designed so that not even 12 coordinated men could get in (with out tools) it has a full 360degree view, and a bomb shelter below it. this means you just poke your head up look around no zombies? go out do some scouting get some sun come back collect some eggs and drop back down to the shelter (other entrance/exits are standard)

I have to disagree with the movie theatre being a bad place overall during Z-Day. While yes being in a movie would severely decrease your chance of knowing that the outbreak had just occurred. I personally would think that the management of any good theatre would inform everyone that a crisis had arisen and would cease any movie being played immediately.
My friends and I have begun our own Zombie survival group and if we all still live in the same area when Z-Day occurs we are heading straight to our Regal Theatre. (It sounds like I’m doing a sales pitch for the theatre but I’m not I am only giving light on our situation and reasoning behind our choice) The reason is because there is only one entrance, all other doors are thick and heavy metal only leading out. The main entrance, while being very large glass doors and windows, are constructed of heavy duty metal and thick glass. The ticket booth is a separate room with a heavy lockable door in between you and a horde of Zombies outside. The glass of the ticket booth is also thick to aid against burglaries. There is a small stockpile of perishable food within the theatre which with a small enough group can last for at least a month or two.
The next part of why a movie theatre would be a good place may not be like all theatre but most of them are indeed like this. Our theatre is within a strip mall which means that the other stores are also likely to provide more means to keep a small to mid-size group alive. The roofs is easily accessible and allow for many vantage point. We also have a wal-mart, BJ’s wholesale, multiple gas stations, and one of the largest providers of gasoline in the state of Georgia within a 1/2 mile radius. We also have plenty of other useful stores within a 5 mile radius. (I know Zombies would most likely be within this larger radius but with the right vehicle they would be passed/run over easily) The parking lot is easily visible day or night thanks to the parking lights as well as large to allow for a plethora of big rigs whenever we can get our hands on them to provide safe travel for more provisions.
I apologize for making this post four paragraphs. I just felt it necessary to inform my Zombie fearing brethren that your neighborhood movie theatre might just be one of the safer places to be, if you are in a suburban area when Z-Day finally occurs.

how about a sporting goods store?
1 entrance 1 exit.
lots of guns + ammo
shopping carts to block the exits with
and if you run out of ammo you could duct tape 2 hockey sticks together and duct tape a baseball bat to the end of that.
BUT THERES ONLY GATORADE AND BEEF JERKEY!
Dr. Detroit on 16 Mar 2008 at 6:36 pm #
Beef Jerky rules. Yet another reason the zombie apocalypse wouldnt be so bad: Eat beef jerky all the time. Lol.
I’d hit the Cosco about 6 blocks from my house. I have enough friends near me where some of em should be alive to help get there and secure it. Coscos have slide down garage/loading bay doors that could be locked and secured quickly. Supplies? Damn near anything, and in massive amounts. Personally I’d hunt down the 40 lb. box of beef jerky and get to work :)

Actually there’s another thing to add about the cemetery. I work in a coffin factory that manufactures a solid 50% of the coffins sold in the U.S. and I can promise you that by the time the last bit of dirt hits the top of the pile the coffin below has been crushed by the weight of the dirt.

Pffff, I can top all y’all… The Worst place during a zombie outbreak is in a nudist colony with no weapons or trasportation of any sort. Just you surrounded by hundreds of nekkid, aging zombies. Yeah. Let THAT image soak in for a bit…
