Lets face the Zombie Attack Facts
#1 The attack will happen quickly and take even the prepared by complete surprise. (Who really wants to shoot their friends and family) and that will lead to a very high rate of infection.
#2 You will have to be able to survive for one week minimum. I belive that the most important piece of gear will be a hand crank radio to lisiten to the news. (Think Avoidance) Then stock of lightweight backpackers goodies. (Think freeze dried and water purification pump)Then a quality silenced rifle and pistol.
#3 After that first week the infected will greatly outnumber the uninfected. SO just take the stuff that they had. You see the simple fact is that the chance of finding equipment and food will increase for a period of time and then those stocks will start to dry up.
#4 Staying put in an urban area is madness. UNLESS you are stuck there by traffic jambs or weather. LEAVE. Get to OPEN COUNTRY. Find a place where you can see for miles. Hill tops in the midwest come to mind. If you see a Zombie hord heading your way simply drive to another location. The point is that you will not and can not get cornered. (In the movies only the cornered people get killed)
#4A If you must stay keep a low profile. The uninfected will be a big problem as well. (They can think) Wait out the initial attack and then leave.
#5 Be Ruthless and "Evil". Survival is by definition only for the strong. If you must do something do it 100% and do not back off. The strike hard and fast mentality will keep you alive.
#6 You can survive on 10% of what you are surviving on today. You just might not like it that much. Conserve everything. It WILL come in handy again.

At some point for various reasons fire is a necessity, either for food, as a weapon, warmth, etc. I have a magnesium air force survival starter available at any camping supply and easy to use even if wet . And for close quarters hand to hand with the zeds especially with blunt instruments you may want to have a bottle or two of chlorine handy in case of bloodborne splatter exposure. All melee weapons would have this drawback.

so why are we starting a fire? Are we like cooking some roast duck? Unless you've managed to shoot a deer and you need to cook something honestly how often do you need to make a large light and smell to attract the undead?

Eh, the tool just seems worth having, regardless of survival situation. Sure, you can grab a lighter from a conveinence store, but how many other people in your area will do just that? And do you really want to risk a dangerous raid in a overun city or town?

I own a fire steel and trust, these things will never wear out. They are guaranteed for something silly like 10,000 strike, or at least mine is, and the spark will light dry cotton wool.

I've even seen some with built in tinder boxes.

That said, don't rely on this as your primary/only knife and fire lighting method, because if you loose it, you've lost two tools.....Not good.

I have posted a few times on the uselessness of a knife, or other similar hand-to-hand weapon.

But as a survival tool, this is outstanding. True, lighters are a dollar-a-dozen (and can be used as IED's as well) but you can't make a spear, or a lean-to, or disabling punji-stick trap without a blade of some sort.

Yes, flint-sparked fires are not the easiest to make, but it beats no fire at all. I would recommend learning this skill (and many others the general populace are too lazy to even try to learn, much less master) in the event of a wide range of disasters, not just zombies.

To quote ZAC, " Stay Safe. Stay Informed. Stay Alive." and I'd add, "Stay Alert". With this gadget, "Stay Warm"
