The Mobile Zombie Preparedness Kit Gets an Update
We all know we need to be prepared to go mobile when the attack of the undead is upon us. We have also prepared a helpful guide on what items you need in your Mobile Zombie Preparedness Kit (MZPK). However, your MZPK might not be complete without this handy item, brought to our attention by avid reader Doug. Gadget Mania offers a write-up about the ToolLogic Firesteel knife.

“The Swedish made Firesteel combined with a special notch on the blade delivers an intense shower of sparks at nearly 3000º. It will even spark when wet! At just 2.7 oz it’s perfect for a wide range of uses and it deserves a place in your backpack or emergency survival kit.”

Is this really necessary? Lighters from the gas station are like a dollar a peice, and I dont know if youve tried this but making a fire with flint or using sparks of any kind, its a real pain in the ass.
If your hell bent on carrying it though take an old film canister, or whatever you want really as long as its water proof, and pack it full of cotton soaked in vasaline. Shits’ like napalm.

Heh heh. well said, Jordan. I say Butane lighters are best though, they are very for wind to put out and they burn hot as shit.

gadgets… what happens when they go wrong then?

really, the only way a butane lighter could go wrong is if it runs out of butane.a butane lighter is pretty much the same as a regular lighter, it just burns butane. And if you run out of butane you could easily find some more in a gas station or otherwise. a butane canister is a common household item. Also the lighters themselves will be readily available in gas stations and what not so even if it breaks you can replace it.

“…And if you run out of butane you could easily find some more in a gas station or otherwise…”
That is assuming that gas stations and the like will not have already fallen victim to looting by those seeking survival tools from quick access locations.
“…gadgets… what happens when they go wrong then?…”
If all else fails, with this tool you still have a knife, which is always useful.

True…

By all means, if you can get by on lighters for any length of time, it might be useful to do so–using this knife to light fires will inevitably damage and wear down the blade.
It might be smart to keep one lighter on-hand, though, for emergency situations. Always best to be over-prepared than under-prepared.

I have posted a few times on the uselessness of a knife, or other similar hand-to-hand weapon.
But as a survival tool, this is outstanding. True, lighters are a dollar-a-dozen (and can be used as IED’s as well) but you can’t make a spear, or a lean-to, or disabling punji-stick trap without a blade of some sort.
Yes, flint-sparked fires are not the easiest to make, but it beats no fire at all. I would recommend learning this skill (and many others the general populace are too lazy to even try to learn, much less master) in the event of a wide range of disasters, not just zombies.
To quote ZAC, ” Stay Safe. Stay Informed. Stay Alive.” and I’d add, “Stay Alert”. With this gadget, “Stay Warm”

I own a fire steel and trust, these things will never wear out. They are guaranteed for something silly like 10,000 strike, or at least mine is, and the spark will light dry cotton wool.
I’ve even seen some with built in tinder boxes.
That said, don’t rely on this as your primary/only knife and fire lighting method, because if you loose it, you’ve lost two tools…..Not good.

lighters do run out but its the end of the world who would be worried about keeping business going but still it couldnt hurt to have flint

“lighters do run out”
Uh, yes, lighters do actually run out.

Eh, the tool just seems worth having, regardless of survival situation. Sure, you can grab a lighter from a conveinence store, but how many other people in your area will do just that? And do you really want to risk a dangerous raid in a overun city or town?
