Zombie Outbreak in New Orleans?
ZAC reader Kelly notified our staff of a possible zombie outbreak in New Orleans. Below is the complete article:
“A Metairie resident is recovering after a stranger bit a chunk of flesh out of his arm, and swallowed it, Saturday afternoon.
Joseph Lancellotti, 67, told authorities he did not know the suspect, later identified as Mario Vargas, 48, or why he was attacked in his front yard.
Lancellotti was gardening at his home in the 4400 block of Kawanee Avenue about 2 p.m. when he noticed a man walking toward his house, shouting angrily, the report said. Lancellotti said he couldn’t understand the man because he was yelling in Spanish. But when the man got within two feet, he slugged Lancellotti in the head, the report said.
Lancellotti said he tried to defend himself with a garden rake. As the men struggled over the rake, the stranger bent over and bit Lancellotti on his right forearm, the report said. Lancellotti’s flesh ripped away as he fell to the ground. The man then got on top of Lancellotti and began choking him, the report said.
It was then that neighbor Chantal Lorio, a podiatrist and director of the Wound Center at East Jefferson General Hospital, came out to check on Lancellotti. Lorio said Monday that she first thought Lancellotti was having a heart attack and the other man was trying to help him.
The stranger was still gripping Lancellotti as Lorio noticed her neighbor was lying in a pool of blood. She didn’t learn what happened until she began dressing the wound — with the stranger still clutching her neighbor’s shirt.
“He said, ‘He bit my arm, chewed the flesh and swallowed it in front of me,’ ” Lorio recalled. She said the bite measured almost 3 by 1 1/2 inches, and was less than 1/4-inch deep.
The pair tried to calm the stranger, who never made any attempt to run away. He eventually let go of Lancellotti and walked two blocks to a parking lot, where he hovered near an empty police car, the report said. The suspect was still standing there when deputies arrived and took him into custody.
Vargas, of 724 Camp St., New Orleans, was booked with second-degree battery. He was being held Monday at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center in Gretna in lieu of $25,000 bail. Lancellotti’s wife, Bonnie, 60, said Monday that her husband was recovering from the bite, physically and mentally. She said his sense of safety in his neighborhood has been shaken. With all the bacteria involved, Lorio said a bite from a human is worse than an animal bite.
Bonnie Lancellotti also has concerns about the suspect, who apparently had been treated at East Jefferson General Hospital earlier in the day for a finger injury. Vargas was released 45 minutes before the attack, according to the incident report.
Bonnie Lancellotti wondered whether hospital staff noticed anything amiss while treating Vargas. “This person’s clearly lost his sense,” she said. “I mean, what else can you say, eating people’s skin?”
Keith Darcey, spokesman for the hospital, said, “We cannot comment on any individual patient because of privacy laws. But as a matter of general hospital policy, the emergency department has behavioral health nurses available to help diagnose patients who might require mental health assistance.”
There is no further reports as to the extent of the outbreak and naturally, officials are not labeling this as an attack from the undead. Our contacts in the area are reporting that the information about being transferred to a mental institution is a government cover-up so that the outbreak can be effectively contained without more panic from the general public.
The original article above was written by Michelle Hunter, East Jefferson Bureau, which appears online here.

Come on, guys! This isn’t a case of the walking dead! A crazy crackhead isn’t news that should be posted on here as a zombie attack! You can cause a panic with frivolous reporting like that. What happened to stay informed? How can we do that if you’re gonna post bogus info up! You guys do such good work on here I just don’t want to see this site go the way of the dodo… or something.
Splint Chesthair on 07 Apr 2009 at 1:05 pm #
Not surprising to start here. Take one overpopulated city, flood it, add oppressive heat and a bunch of leeching man-made chemicals, let fester and then add a bunch of people to dig through it all. this is not a drill people. Start your first phase of Zombie defense NOW!

omg we are under attack.. first miami.. then the rest of the US, then the entire world.. somebody needs to goto miami and make sure they finish off both lancellotti and vargas and maybe even lorio before they completely turn and start off another zombie epidemic!!!
are those addresses correct?? cause this needs to be stopped at the source.. we need volunteers!!

You want a scary “zombie” story then look up a rapper by the name of Big Lurch. He got high on PCP and was found wandering the streets with a half eaten lung in his hand. In his hotel room they found most orf the rest of the dead hooker he picked up earlier that night.
Angryvikingman on 07 Apr 2009 at 4:28 pm #
Yeah, I’m ready. Humanity needs a cleansing anyway.

It sounds like he’s just out of his mind. We could not get lucky enough for a zombie out brake. We need one to thin out the masses of week and dumb people.
ImmaKillaZombieButBeReal on 07 Apr 2009 at 10:13 pm #
Sounds great, but I’ve been led on by so many articles like this that it’s difficult to maintain any kind of faith. At this rate, I’ll never get to shoot a zombie’s head off. :(

Seeing how little real-life information is available on zombie behavior, all three individuals should be held for observation. Early stages could easily resemble dementia as the brain dies and is zombified. I am sure that if a response team had been nearby, Vargas wouldn’t have come out of this with his skull intact.
What is the nature of Vargas’ finger injury? He may not be patient zero. New Orleans response teams need to be at phase one.
/be prepared

Boing Boing has just linked to this article so we should be sorting everything out shortly. But articles like these do raise a few questions that I made reference to in my previous post. Shouldn’t we have phases of Zombie Preparednes? I mean, one article like this does not cause me to pack the bug out vehicle and grab the shotgun and sit on the roof but it should prompt me to do something. So what I did was do an inventory re-check, I made sure flashlights, lanterns, and such were in working order. I reviewed my emergency list to check to see if I could add or delete anything or find expired food/medical supplies. I checked my ammunition and readied firearms. I made sure the bugout bags were located properly and hadn’t been depleted of supplies for some reason. Finally, I reviewed escape plans and meetup locations with the family.
None of this was very much of a burden but the time spent doing this leisurely is surely worth it should this just be the beginning.
kelly on 09 Apr 2009 at 1:53 pm #
Of course you’re going to dismiss this as some crackhead, that’s how things get out of
hand to begin with. Your mind won’t allow you to think it’s a real zombie because of
defense mechanisms, denial comes to mind….
Anyway, when you recieve new information your brain causes it to catagorize into info
banks you already know/experienced.
Dismiss this if you want…but I’m going over my kit and plans.
BTW…..this zombie attack happened within a couple of blocks at the hospital I work at
where Vargas was initially treated :) so yah…this is extra scary for me.
Oh…I also heard about this story in Poland…

I agree with you Splint. Nothing to make me wanna “hole up in the bunker” so to speak but it is a wake up call. I checked my guns, ammo, and food to make sure it was all still good. No rust spots no water leakages. I’m good. Also heres an idea: go through your MZPK every once and a while and think “do i really need that?” water+food+some form of weapon= must haves!!!!! anything else that can fit and would be useful in your area would be good. i just recently finished up a first aid class so i have a basic first aid kidin my bag as well. Something the rest of you may want to look into doing.

Kelly, it just seems to me that we’re starting to get like those fanatical christians that see the face of Jesus on a piece of toast. A crazy crackhead bites someone and it becomes a case of the walking dead at large. There are two sides to this whole undead outbreak spectrum. Either extreme is bad.
Dsurion on 10 Apr 2009 at 10:07 pm #
Extreme or not, it’s always worthwhile to pay attention. After all, I bet they didn’t think that one sneezing guy covered in circular rashes would start the Black Plague. Even if it’s just a nutcase, it still might be interesting to consider what might have caused him to jump off the deep end.
Angryvikingman on 10 Apr 2009 at 11:02 pm #
Bet the guy has Toxoplasmosis. (Mind altering/controllong bacteria)
Marius on 11 Apr 2009 at 2:59 am #
While I agree that we shouldn’t start the headshot/bunker setups yet, after reading that I just went through my kit, and will be refreshing the expired rations, and am booking time at the range, it’s been a while since I was there and I need to hone my shooting anyway.
But yeah, some one needs to find out if Vargas’s finger wound was a bite, and if so, we need to start worrying, we should also keep our ears open for the guy that got bitten as he might be starting to turn if this is stage 1
Angryvikingman on 11 Apr 2009 at 8:39 am #
Yeah, I got out to the range just for some practice. My 7 year old is proving to be quite the shooter. I got a great video of him on youtube nailing metal pop-up targets with a GSG-5.
(off topic, I know, bit I cant resist bragging)

Mr. Fok on 13 Apr 2009 at 11:43 am #
I saw the video. Cool as Hell, bro! That’s pretty crazy how good your kid is. It’s tottaly ok to brag about your kid. That’s what parents do when they’re proud of thier progeny.
Sharpshooter on 13 Apr 2009 at 12:14 pm #
Ok so quick question!!!! Paintball masks. not as good as say a military issue gas mask but would you take it if you could? I would just for the sake of “i have THAT much more protection between me and them
Mr. Heston on 29 Apr 2009 at 4:58 pm #
I too agree that we shouldn’t start the lock-down bunker setups yet either… However, after reading that post, I too went through my kit, and found it lacking some vital items. If nothing else, we need these kinds of shake ups to keep us on our toes… So, time to head over to COSTCO and the surplus/ammo shop to refresh my expired rations, and add a little more ammo to the current stores I may head out to the range as well in the coming week as I could use a little shooting practice as well…But I agree as well, I think someone (perhaps Kelly since you are just a few blocks away.) can find out if Vargas’s finger wound was a bite or other type of puncture wound where fluids have entered the body and maybe any other valuable information that this group can use… I’m not gonna head for the hills just yet, but it’s always a good idea to be vigilant and prepared for Stage 1 outbreak. It will happen someday lets hope that the majority of us are for humanities sake…
Dsurion on 30 Apr 2009 at 2:51 am #
@Sharpshooter:
I suppose it depends what you intend to use it for. Stopping infected blood splatter in your face? No problem, and a great choice at that. Stopping death by toxic inhalation? Eh, not so much. There are many gas masks on Ebay that are relatively inexpensive with a large field of vision necessary to see, and most of them use NATO standard filter canisters. Down side is, don’t expect to run too far or long while wearing one of those things…breathing through a filter is hard work.
And speaking of seeing, make sure to get one that can accomodate glasses, should you need to wear them. Nothing worse than getting aced by a zombie because you can’t see jack while wearing the gas mask.
Sharpshooter on 30 Apr 2009 at 3:15 pm #
yeah just for making sure blood doesnt get on your face or in your mouth, eyes, or nose….. gas though it would do nothing. and maybe if you could get them maybe get a doctormask thingy (i dont know what they are called sorry) ive also seen them used in like woodworking too.

Hey, just in case you guys want some military manuals, and don’t want to pay for them, I found a place that has just about every manual you’d ever want. Including nuclear and biological protection, decontamination, ect.
http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/library/policy/army/fm/
You can check the rest of the site for manuals from other branches of service.
Just thought I’d spread the information to keep you people prepared and alive.

Am i the only one curious about this fucking swine flu?!?! Not saying its the apocolypse but maybe a sign?!
Angryvikingman on 05 May 2009 at 7:27 am #
Did you guys catch that thing on G4 about the group called “Z.A.P.T.”?
They’re from louisiana. I made a friendly suggestion on their myspace page that they change the configuration of the yugoslavian SKS that they had pictured with their gear. I suggested that they change from the 10 round internal factory mag that has to be loaded via stipper clips through the top of the action, to the 30 round detachable mags by simply removing the trigger group and then the 10 round mag and then replace the trigger group. All of this can be accomplished in little more than a minute, and improves the rifles capabilities. But they responded that the detachable mags made the rifle unreliable, and an unreliable weapon could get you killed. While the last part may be true, by no means does the detachable 30 round magazine make the gun unreliable. If you tried to modify the gun for a use it was not intended, then it could cause the weapon to function improperly. I clarified my statement by saying that yes, attempting to modify the gn for AK style mags was stupid, the people who designed the gun also designed the “Duck Bill” type 30 round detachable magazine, and designed it to replace the internal factory mag. I’m sorry to post about it here, but it seemed to me that they were trying to impune my knowledge of firearms. Sorry, but when it comes to weapons, I know WTF im talking about. I had an Ithaca lever action .22 rifle that I shot almost daily by the time I was 4, and I’ve been a gun nut ever since. I know more about more types guns and other weapons than just about anyone else I know. Considering I’m from the south, and lived in the sticks most of my life, that’s an accomplishment. Ugh, that just rubbed me all kinds of the wrong way. Nuke this post if you want, I just needed to rant.

Swine flu schmine flu…more people die annually from the regular flu here in California than have died so far in this “worldwide pandemic”. Just a bunch of bloody scaremongering by idiot savant news agencies with nothing better to do if you ask me. Statistically speaking, the risk of actually contracting it is pretty microscopic, and if you’re careful it’s almost nonexistant.
But who knows? Feasibly it could spiral out of control and kill us all, but with the sheer number of countermeasures levelled against it you know that will never happen.
2ID on 24 May 2009 at 7:40 pm #
yeah about the swine flu, right now in the us under a dozen have died from the flu, and over 25 have died from just trying different vaccine’s!

This isn’t a zombie outbreak… If he was a zombie he wouldn’t have stopped attacking.

come on guys dont we all know that this is from the book ” the zombie survival guide ” it is in the part were the historic attacks or something like that
ZAC Admin on 08 Jun 2009 at 6:27 am #
Juan, are you saying that this event, which occurred in 2009, was somehow included in a book that was published in 2003 as a historic event?
Zjechy on 15 Jun 2009 at 6:04 pm #
XD zac but seriously if this were of the undead wouldn’t there be details like the stranger reeked of blood or dirt or something like that? and since when do zombies shout?

guys wouldnt the army take everybody to a bunker and kill all the zombies and then they would issue any one with a gun and give guns to people who dont have any and how would a zombie outbreak start the the gouvernment wouldnt allow people to do that stuff
RobinDB on 13 Jul 2009 at 8:40 pm #
I don’t necessarily believe that it WILL happen, but I can’t really doubt that someday, somehow a virus MIGHT evolve in such a way that it is able to take control of an animal’s body, including humans, and make it go all crazy as hell, eatin’ it’s own kind and what not. But as far as just some dead guy coming back to life, that crap is for a 5-year old’s ghost story. So if any solid evidence comes out that a zombie virus epidemic is breaking out, I’ll prepare. And maybe at first, maybe the government would try to make up excuses for it, thinking they could take care of the issue before it got out of hand. But if they failed and it started to spread, they would definitely inform the public and try to ensure everyone’s survival.
BTW who has seen 28 days later and 28 weeks later? OMG I love those movies. xD
