Zombie FAQs

Photo credit: Scott Beale / Laughing Squid
Over the years I have seen and heard many questions regarding zombies. Some quite intelligent and thought provoking others, less so. However, there are several questions that have been raised that I have answered time and time again. So, to stave off the inevitable homicidal rampage a few more hours here are the answers to the questions that have been put to me must often. Now, shut up already!
What is a zombie?
Okay, here is without a doubt the most common question. Firstly, what a zombie is not. A zombie is not your stoner neighbor. Though they may have the shambling, slack jawed, clueless look about them they are not the living dead, just the lifeless husk of the living. What a zombie is, by definition, is the living dead or undead. They have been brought to life or unlife by a virus that animates the dead bodies of those infected while live. You cannot turn a corpse into a zombie.
Do zombies eat brains?
No, they do not. This is a pop culture misconception from the movies. Zombies don’t eat flesh either, not in the traditional sense of the words at least. They may consume flesh but they receive no nutritional value from it. They seek out and consume flesh only to try to infect the living and to add to their own numbers.
What kind of zombies are you talking about?
For all intensive purposes on ZAC when we talk about zombies we are referring to the Max Brooks model from his book The Zombie Survival Guide, not the zombies from Night of The Life Dead, Resident Evil or 28 Days Later. Otherwise, by Max Brooks zombies we mean that the zombies are not intelligent, they cannot move quickly, they seek to infect you with their bite or through other fluid transfers. And, no do not go there you sick necrophiliacs!
How do you kill a zombie?
Generally speaking, to kill a zombie you have to destroy the brain. This can be done a number of ways, but the most common ways are to crush the skull with a bludgeon of some sort or to place a well aimed shot between the eyes. Once you manage to kill the zombie it is also recommended that you burn the corpse to completely destroy any chance of infection.
Do zombies have super strength?
No, a zombie is no stringer than the person who existed before they succumbed to the virus. The only difference is since a zombie lacks any inhibitors to stop it from over exerting itself then can but every once of strength into their grip. On a plus note, since the zombie is slowly decaying their strength will slowly decline and wane.
Are zombies smarter since they eat brains?
I have actually been asked this question, the thought being that since zombies consume other people’s gray matter they must be adding to their own. No, zombies are not smart, they are little more than a plague of retards since they are using only the most basic functions of the mind to act and exist.
Do you suffer from insanity or delusions?
No, I happen to enjoy both my insanity and delusions quite a lot. Thank you for asking, though.

I can’t count the times I’ve had to explain that the “zombies” in 28 Days Later are not actually zombies, or smack somebody who tries to discuss zombies with me and then mentions Return of the Living Dead. Another one that always gets me is the belief that corpses will start digging themselves out of cemetaries.
Some people just don’t get it!

great post! if anybody ever bugs me about zombies i’ll either have him read the zombies survival guide or visit your site!

There should be a convention for people like us.
3ID on 15 Sep 2009 at 7:59 am #
I totaly agree Angryvikingman it would be a very interesting convention more of a survialist type than poeple dressing up like zombies those poeple freek me out
jay on 15 Sep 2009 at 8:23 am #
well said good topic…
Ronin666 on 15 Sep 2009 at 8:46 am #
Did anyone else pick up Res Evil 2 when they are hiding in a graveyard and the corpses start digging their way out and attacking? WTF was that about considering the zombies in that movie are virus victims?. I love the res evil movies but they blew that scene big time.
jay on 15 Sep 2009 at 10:18 am #
that was a real good place to stop and have a rest in the graveyard lol but its a good
film though
KIHL_THA_ZOMBIE_HORDE on 15 Sep 2009 at 10:43 am #
angryvikingman is right we should totally have a convention for people like us, itd be way more interesting than those stupid star wars wanna-be conventions
Angryvikingman on 15 Sep 2009 at 1:10 pm #
LOL! Survivalist convention would get shut down by the government.
Yeah, how would someone dig out of a grave? first of all, you’re in a coffin, which limits your movement, and you have probably close to a ton of dirt on top of you. If it had been a while, then the dirt may even be pretty well packed, making it even harder. I know its a move, but shit, thats insanely unrealistic.
sean on 15 Sep 2009 at 7:57 pm #
finally some basic context
people have been arguing over their deffinitions of what a zombie is since this site began
thanks for that…
Andy on 15 Sep 2009 at 8:16 pm #
I might be alone in this, but I count the zombies from the Dawn of the Dead remake in the above catagory. One of the things I really liked about that portrayal was how the zombies started out more like trauma victims, moving as fast or slowly anyone else would, then slowed down as their bodies began to decay. Other than that, I have always gone by the classic George Romero standard. For the purposes of this forum, though, I appreciate the FAQ!
Andy on 15 Sep 2009 at 8:17 pm #
Oh! Here’s a name for the convention… ZombiCon!
3ID on 16 Sep 2009 at 7:57 am #
Andy i do agree with the dawn of the dead film how they would start of fast but slow down rapidly do to decay and tissiue break down
ZombiCon wow that would atract a lot of wierd poeple i was thinking of some trhing smaller like a this website only maybe but thats me i would like to meat all of my fellow zombies hunters in person
jonessoda023 on 16 Sep 2009 at 4:12 pm #
This topic pretty much sums up my opinion of zombies. and in 28 days later that was a rage virus anyway not a zombie virus so its stupid when people call them zombies. and Yeah a convention would be cool but you’d have to try and keep the weird people away.
Andy on 16 Sep 2009 at 8:21 pm #
Well, everyone’s a little too spread out for a backyard barbecue…What about a web convention, or, like a virtual training camp?
Angryvikingman on 17 Sep 2009 at 12:33 am #
I’ll work on some videos. My friend has a high dollar digital hard drive camera. I’ll do some survival type stuff. Cant really do any shooting demonstrations. Its best for that kind of thing to be live.
jay on 17 Sep 2009 at 5:09 am #
andy.. i think thats a good idear about a web convention!!
3ID on 17 Sep 2009 at 7:51 am #
i am a little computer illiterate what acsactly is a web convention and what does it entitle doing i wont show my face on the internet and i know Kain wont either so that is that i thinkl the closest person to me and kain is angry vikingman for me it would be agood 3 to 4 hour drive up that way not to bad
Angryvikingman on 17 Sep 2009 at 12:42 pm #
SHit, I’d drive to georgia. 3 hours is nothing.
Angryvikingman on 17 Sep 2009 at 12:44 pm #
Or where ever. As long as it was over a weekend. As long as I didnt have to bring anyone else, I think I could get all my crap in the car.
(gun cases, ammo cans, tent, clothes, alice pack, harness, and my ego. LOL)
Andy on 17 Sep 2009 at 12:59 pm #
You wouldn’t have to show your face, 3ID, you could use an avatar…What I’m thinking of would basically be like having links to each person’s “booth,” which would have, say, Angryvikingman’s videos, collectibles, things you could maybe buy or trade, maybe even a few contests. It would be another page on this site that you could navigate to, updated once a year, let’s say. I’d love to see some interactive content as well, but that’s a hell of a lot of tech time to donate…
kaoticdark86 on 17 Sep 2009 at 2:16 pm #
Go-to http://www.nobullshitsurvival.com and the delta69alpha on youtube. it’s full of survival goodness.
Angryvikingman on 17 Sep 2009 at 11:40 pm #
I’ve already got two websites that I sort of “maintain”. One is just a crap site of my own, and one is a hunting website for my buddy. Its not like its hard to throw up a site in 20-30 minutes. I could do a page with videos, flash, and other content pretty quick. Of course most of it would be stolen. LOL! I’d rather do something in person, but I can do some web content also. Gonna start working on videos after work tomorrow.

Well guys, Angryvikingman and Andy and others, if you want to help ZAC I can put a word in for you. Trust me when I say we need all the help we can get, especially since I’ve been trying to do at least one article a week and having a few others, even if they only posted one a month would take a load off my shoulders. Plus anything to help the site would be very much appreciated.(I.E. for those of you who post regularity on other sites put the word out. Like Barnum said no publicity is bad publicity.)If you want I can get in touch with you. One thing I would like to eventually have on the site, and this is me wishing, is a dedicated forum where you guys, as members, could create your own topics. But, such are dreams.
And a sorta get together would be neat, a get to know you deal. And Angryvikingman, if you are ever in the Atlanta area give me or 3ID a notice. Both of us would like to meet you, share a beer or a meal, hope you drink decent beer though, yuengling is the beer of choice around here. A pity that the groups so spread out though, I can cook some pretty damn good BBQ, ask 3ID. Though I have to object to the name Zombicon. To close to Dragoncon which just went down in Altanta, though I think ZAC should have been in representation, we need T-shirts damnit, but I was thinking of a title more along the lines of ZACC the Zombies Are Coming Convention. But, that’s just me and not wanting to go with the flow, so I’m not going to hold my breath on the committee going with that name. Just for god sakes don’t go with some political correct malarkey.
Though I can only imagine the sights that we would behold at a convention full of the nutjobs on this site. And, in a way I’m sort of glad we are not doing one anytime soon, I would really hate to have to get up in front of all of you and have to give a pseudo speech because I write for the bloody site. Then again, among friends… not so bad.
“They won’t get me they won’t get me thought they never cease to try
they won’t get me they won’t get me I would rather fight and die
they won’t get me they won’t get me well my friend will they get you?
when they get you when they get you tell me what are you gonna do?”

Beer and BBQ? Sounds good to me. I’ve never tried yuengling, but people keep saying I should. I like my buddy jake’s homebrew beer just about the best. After that, Blue Moon, Coors Light, Miller Light, and Pabst Blue Ribbon. Then, maybe if you didnt have any of that, I’d drink some budweiser. If you’re buying, I’m drinking whatever. LOL Just have to go out in the country and shoot some stuff, THEN drink and eat BBQ.
I’ve told a lot of my friends about the site, but I haven’t seen one post from any of those bastards yet. Oh well.
If you want some shirts, try setting up a cafepress.com shop. That way people can get your logos on hoodies, beer steins, and thong underwear if they want. (Lots of other neat stuff too)
The Nashville zombie walk is today(saturday). I was thinking about going. I have to go to my class III shop and order a gun today too. MUA HA AHA HA! Gonna get a mossberg security model 8 shot and mod the ever loving fuck out of it with the warhammer tactical rail, full stock with pistol grip, flashlight, and red dot sight. I’m drooling already. All for under $400!
Seriously, IF there was ever a get together, IM SO FUCKING THERE.
Pardon my language.

You should all fly down to Australia and I’ll throw a prawn ( no, we don’t call them shrimp) on the barbie for you. Then again I had this metal image of you all trying to pass thru customs with your gear LOL.

Man, I’d love it if there was a convention like that around where i live. But Ya, a web forum/con would be pretty sweet too. First I need to get rid of my spare tire before I start posting any vids though lol, and I still don’t have a camera. Oh, but I did get to go shooting the other day for my first time at a range (if you don’t count 22′s at the ol farm that is) It was pretty fun. Shot my bro’s m&p 9mm pistol, his gal-pal’s 22 pistol, her bro’s 9mm, and his 30-06. Lot’s of fun, Even though my groups sucked, not zombie skull rated with the pistol until at about 10 yards haha!
Angryvikingman on 19 Sep 2009 at 11:54 pm #
Got myself an 8 shot mossberg 500A today. Pistol grip foregrip and rear. Has heatshield with ghostring sights. I’m gonna change it up a bit, put a full stock with pistol grip on it. Just need the tac rail, and new foregrip. And it’ll be all done. Picked up four more mags for my AR also, that brings the total to 20. Not bad for $338 after taxes and background check. They even threw in a box of shells. Less than 5 minutes after returning home, I blew the shit out of a 32oz. gatorade bottle full of water. As soon as I get all of my crap in the mail, I’ll post before and after pictures.

Kain - ZAC Weapon Consultant on 20 Sep 2009 at 4:54 pm #
I shot an email your way Andy, whenever you get some free time feel free. And by the way, no pressure, some of my early articles were less than stellar.
And do let us know how that Mossberg run Angryvikingman. I’ve dealt with the 590 but not the 500, love the 590 though. God, I really need a dedicated defensive shotgun. I have like eight or ten shotguns, autoloaders, over and unders, and a few competition shotguns, but nothing that is really short for defensive use. Though I can probably aim and fire four shots out of an over an under faster than some can fire out of a pump, never tested that thought. But, I am pretty damn fast with my Ruger Red Label.

or we could make laser weapons, like take apart 500 ps3 s and take the blue ray laser diode and make a fucking huge burning laser thing and just burn the zombies, and we wouldnt have to worry about ammo…it works 2, just one can burn through tvs and stuff

As many of you may or may not know, there is indeed an outbreak of ‘zombism’ in Africa. This is not quite the commercial Zombie you see in movies, but this infection does cause death followed by rebirth. The problem is that they’re brain, rather than rotting, deteriorates certain areas of the brain that become obsolete. So, in other words, leaving the basics. And that is about all that is known about this disease. Also, there is a disease that certain rats are carriers of. This disease does not effect the rat, although anything happening to consuming this rat, or coming into contact with it’s bodily fluids, is now infected with this disease. This is only known to have happened in cats, so there is no certainty that it will effect humans this way. The cats have developed zombie-like qualities and (again) deteriorated sections of the brain. It sounds quite familiar, correct? Almost like the deadly Bubonic or Black plague, wiping out nearly half of old England. Traveling by rats, who did not show symptoms of the disease, and such? My thoughts are that we must keep an eye on this disease, watch its progression, and beware.
A.S.U. on 20 Oct 2009 at 8:09 pm #
Oh, and by the way, if you completely listen to the book by Max, A Zombie Survival Guide, YOU WILL DIE! It makes a multitude of good points, but a sizable amount of it is EXTREMELY dangerous! It’s creation was purely to get people thinking about a possible outbreak.

Am I the only Canadian here? I wish I could go to a zombie con. I can’t attend anything cool without needing to take a plane. :(
I’m poor as shit too, so the only way I’d make it is if I hitchhiked.

(unfortunatly i also have limited funds but would do everything in my power to make it.especially if it was an annual or biannual thing.) why the f*ck not?

They have been brought to life or unlife by a virus that animates the DEAD bodies of those infected while LIVE.
How can something be dead and alive at the same time?
A.S.U. on 06 Nov 2009 at 12:49 pm #
What they believe to be true is that the virus takes over the brain (parts) and uses whatever is left to control the corpse like a puppet. I (and many others) consider it not dead, not alive, but reanimated.
