Press Release: Survival of the Dead

Immediately following the events of Diary of the Dead, SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD is the 6th film from George A. Romero to look at a world where humans are in the minority and the zombies rule.
Off the coast of Delaware sits the cozy Plum Island where two families are locked in a struggle for power, as it has been for generations. The O’Flynn’s, headed by patriarch Patrick O’Flynn (Kenneth Welsh) approach the zombie plague with a shoot-to-kill attitude. The Muldoons, headed by Shamus Muldoon (Richard Fitzpatrick), feel that the zombies should be quarantined and kept ‘alive,’ in hopes that a solution will someday be found.
The O’Flynn’s, who are clearly outnumbered, are forced to exile Patrick by boat to the mainland, where he meets up with a band of soldiers, headed by Guardsman Sarge (Alan Van Sprang). They join forces and return to the island, to find that the zombie plague has fully gripped the divided community.
As the battle between humans and zombies escalates, the master filmmaker continues to reinvent the modern horror genre with wicked humor and pointed social commentary.
SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD premieres on VOD, Amazon, Xbox Zune and Playstation April 30 and will be in theaters on May 28th .

I know the girl would have died like 3 times if that was real.
McLuvin on 30 Mar 2010 at 4:39 pm #
No, Diary did suck. Romero isn’t all he’s cracked up to be. Hopefully he pulls his head out of his ass and makes something the quality of Dawn of the Dead(the new one).
Angryvikingman on 30 Mar 2010 at 7:25 pm #
Well the 2004 version was done by the same guy who later directed 300. The original screenplay was rewritten by James Gunn, so it wasnt purely a Romero film. It was however, one of the top 3 zombie flicks of all time in my humble opinion.
Ronin666 on 31 Mar 2010 at 12:26 am #
Diary was complete shite. From what I’ve heard and seen of the trailers this doesn’t look to be much better. Romero had his day and all zombie movies that came after his big 3 owe a lot to him but that was a long time ago. I think you’re average zombie film viewer wants a little more than shoot and scream these days, they want a character driven story, with characters they can become attached to and care about, rather than the stereo-typical, meat head, clever guy, scared guy and girl that screams a lot and lets not forget the token colored person.
Any producers/directors looking for just such a story should give me a call :)

I actually quite enjoyed Diary of the Dead xD It was ridiculously stupid, but I still found it enjoyable. At least it was more accurate than Land of the Dead.
From the sound of it, this should be good.
P.S, i believe the 2004 version of Dawn of the Dead was directed by Quentin Tarantino.

I have to absolutely agree with Ronin, people don’t want to watch the same thing that has been done before. And characters are probably the most important part of the story, good characters can pull up a lackluster storyline, while bad characters can kill a really good story. Another thing that has pissed me off on occasion are the ones where you get one character who is in all senses a god in battle. I’ll use a book I tried to read, the main character was sooo arrogant that I could not stand the book, the entire story was “I did this!” And “I did that!” And “Look how awesome I am you can even lay a finger on me! HAHAHAHA!” It was like reading a book written by a 12 year old on a power trip. Actually a good comparison would have a Mike Harmon from John Ringo’s Ghost but with ten times the sex and none of the character flaws and the ability to never be touched in battle and who gloats the whole times about how good he is. I guess since I dabble in writing I pay more attention to the characters than others, but at least I try to have characters who, even if they aren’t human, at the very least possess human emotions and qualities. Of course I’ll concede the fact really good characters are hard to write, hell three full revisions in, and a few hundred minor revisions, I’m just now getting the character to sound good enough that I’ll let others read the actual story and not just small portions, course getting honest criticism which is more than just is was nice is harder than pulling teeth from a frog. Ronin might understand what I mean.
“They won’t get me they won’t get me thought they never cease to try
they won’t get me they won’t get me I would rather fight and die
they won’t get me they won’t get me well my friend will they get you?
when they get you when they get you tell me what are you gonna do?”

I’ve Seen it. It’s not very good. The zombies are weak, small in number and not really a big threat or point of the movie.
ThatScoutKid on 31 Mar 2010 at 4:50 pm #
kain you read ghost? i got a copy that had 2 halves to it( the first half was pretty cool but the second one had waaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy to much sex in it and not enough action) but the first half was good IMO. not a very strong plot though…
ThatScoutKid on 31 Mar 2010 at 4:56 pm #
and viking i liked zombieland but it wasnt really a zombie movie. just a movie with zombies in it. and they usually just used them as comic relief. just sayin. but good movie overall when i think of it as a comedy.
Ronin666 on 31 Mar 2010 at 8:11 pm #
Kain, I’d love to read your work, is it posted anywhere? I come from a background in journalism so I only write it, spell check it and it’s done, I don’t do revisions or re-writes except in the case of Fragments, where so many people were pissed off at the way it ended that I wrote an alt ending to keep them happy.
Ronin666 on 31 Mar 2010 at 8:16 pm #
I might add that the 3 main characters in Conquest of the Dead are fairly godlike but they do have flaws and they like to pay each other out about them. They were so popular I had them appear in my latest story in a cross over as it were, it seems there is something about 3 gun toting sword wielding female zombie slayers that appeals :)

arg, keep thinking of more things to say, must need coffee.
The hardest part of writing a zombie story is a good plot line.
“There’s zombies let’s go kill them and raid the 7/11″ get’s tiring fast, and zombies aren’t the the kind of characters you can give interesting roles to or even personalities, so the living have to be the stars of the story. To make it interesting they need to interact with other living people and so yes, the zombies to tend to take a back seat but it’s their presence that drives the living to do what ever it is they end up doing. I like to explore what comfortable people do when the world changes, some of my my characters have been taxi drivers, military, outlaw bikers, salesman a commercial pilot and in my latest: a pop diva and a horror movie actress, they have all had to change their values and morals, some have made the change successfully, some haven’t. Some have surprised themselves at their own capabilities when push came to shove.
OK, I’m babbling, need coffee.

Ghost was very gratuitous, but that was kinda part of the charm of the story. The four books that followed were okay and laid off on the sex a bit, the last two, Unto the Breech, and Deeper Blue were the two best in my opinion. But, I was trying to use it more as an example and comparison than to say, “Hey go read this.”
@ Ronin, I had to do the revisions because the story evolved as did the characters during the writing process, hell one of the characters in the story was originally little more than a bed warmer than she evolved into this complex character that I had a hard time ignoring and who was a nice foil to the main character at times as well as comic relief. I currently don’t have the story posted anywhere, however I could email it to you easily enough, contact you through facebook or something. Like I said, I’ll take any criticism that I can take at this point.

It’s been a while since they, Hollywood or indie film makers, made a good film. I am a fan of Quarantine, REC and REC2, La Horde, Dawn of the Dead ’04, Resident Evil 1 thru 3 and 28 days/weeks later zombie flicks.
A few reasons why I love these kind of zombie films: the zombies in these movies are seriously fast as f**k with nothing but in their minds but feed and infect which gets me on the edge of my seat, and the contagious disease, virus, blood, bacteria, or chemical substance that infects is more realistic than a rotting corpse coming to life out of a grave and slowly walking, stumbling, and falling all over the place to bite you.

Well, I saw Survival of the Dead and considering the last two I wasn’t really expecting much, so I wasn’t completely disappointed. The film is sort of a spin-off of Diary in the sense that the story revolves around that ground of NG (I guess the super secret special guards) that robbed the film students in that film. As par for Romero of late, the characters are simple archetypes and the plot is a new level of bad.
I guess four episodes of Lifeless is going to be on FEAR.net via streaming or on demand sometime before the months end. Considering that it’s almost the 9th though and no specific date has been given I have my doubts. Well if that falls flat, there’s always The Walking Dead on AMC in October.
Angryvikingman on 09 Apr 2010 at 3:31 am #
I LOVE the waling dead comic! If AMC does anywhere near as good a job as they did on Breaking Bad, then it’ll be a great version of the story.
Dreamornaut on 09 Apr 2010 at 8:34 am #
I totally agree. I lost my taste for comics years ago, but someone turned me on to The Walking Dead and I’ve followed it almost religiously. Although I think Lifeless has some potential if it can work it’s way into a series, The Walking Dead series is what I am really looking forward to.

has anyone see the film the crazies yet? bloody good i think.
McLuvin on 11 Apr 2010 at 8:20 pm #
Crazies was pretty good. I would like to see a sequel about them getting to the city and the government response.

yeah we should be able to learn somthing from it..

Saw the movie on the internet– it was so disappointing! I expected better from Romero =/
The characters had basically no depth, the plot was boring, and the zombie killings were ridiculous; it was such a let down
Ronin666 on 25 Apr 2010 at 12:14 am #
Well I just saw this, it’s better than Diary but only because I can’t stand that hand held shit,( we didn’t invent the steadicam for nothing!)
I think if it was realeased in 1978 it would have been a great film, however, this isn’t 1978. Pathetic effects that I could do better myself with a copy of Combustion (spec effects program).
I’ve seen better with a lower budget.

Diary Of the dead wasnt as great as his other films but it was a decent movie so im kinda excited about this new movie thats coming out. Watching these movies gets you prepared for whats coming so good luck everybody…
Hobohunter on 06 Jun 2010 at 4:14 pm #
Watched survival on Comcast Ondemand what a waste of 10 bucks this movie sucked hard. Romero getting to goddamn preachy with his movies. This one had a terrible cast, an even worse premise, and in this one he’s gone all out with the idea that the zombies and humanity can live together we just have to teach them to eat other animals (f**kin BS). I know that Romero is the godfather of the modern zombie movie but enough is enough the man’s movies are now pussifying the zombie sub-genre. Max Brookes needs to start directing zombie movies, those would be amazing.
