Your Daily Dose of Awareness

We can talk about scenarios, weapons, vehicles, and plan like there is no tomorrow. But to be honest, there are times during the day when we get sidetracked. We lose sight. Planning takes a back seat to our regular routine. Thankfully there is an answer. We were very fortunate to get our hands on the Zombie Survival Guide 2011 Day-to-Day Calendar from the kind, and survival-minded, folks over at Andrews McMeel . What better way to keep zombie awareness fresh in your mind than a daily reminder?
According to the publisher:
There’s no time to lose. It could happen at any moment. It may have already begun. Everyone must prepare for the zombie apocalypse. “Other monsters may threaten individual humans, but the living dead threaten the entire human race. Zombies are slate wipers,” warns author Max Brooks. Based on the best-selling book of the same name, the daily Zombie Survival Guide 2011 Day-to-Day Calendar provides on every page valuable information needed to survive a zombie outbreak: the most effective weapons, combat techniques, how to adapt in any situation, and so much more. Be vigilant. Zombies are coming, and they’re hungry.

One other helpful feature, that many desk calendars do not include, is a mini-journal. The journal gives you an area to document date, time, location, distance away, and other specific information from the outbreak. But in case the outbreak has not yet taken place, this is a perfect location for maintaining notes, numbers, addresses, formulas, and other important information you could use when the outbreak is upon us.

The great thing about this is that in a pinch, you can grab your notes, throw them in your MZPK , and hit the road!
Do not hesitate friends, get yours today! Be sure to check out some of their other zombie related merchandise. We have some 2 more reviews that will be on the way shortly!
Stay safe. Stay informed. Stay alive!

These have been around for awhile now. I got a couple of these for
stocking stuffers for friends a few years ago. It would be nice if they had
new info on them instead of just excerpts from the ZSG. Still cool though.

Awesome, I need to get my hands on all three of his books, and his calendar. Sounds interesting.

The guide is a must. Not quite the bible, but, if you want something to stimulate an overactive imagination, it is a must. Books-a-million usually carrys some if you need access n theres on nearby. You’ll wear the covers off and break the binding reading and cross referencing crap.
wheelgunner on 10 Aug 2010 at 8:32 pm #
Anybody know of a link or some such to the Guide for anyone who doesn’t have, or cannot get ahold, of one? Be a nice adition if it’s not here already and I’m just oblivious again.
-ma-kay-la- on 11 Aug 2010 at 1:24 am #
I listened to World War Z by Max Brooks on the audio book they have on youtube. They’re in parts, and I got to part 6 out of 46. I got tired of listening, I prefer reading.
McLuvin on 11 Aug 2010 at 1:49 am #
I’m with you -ma-kay-la-, I prefer to do my reading the old fashioned way. I don’t think audio books would do it for me.
wheelgunner on 11 Aug 2010 at 2:09 am #
…audiobooks…what strange magic is this?!?!
wheelgunner on 11 Aug 2010 at 10:24 pm #
They have a 1.17 mb torrent download for wwz on pirate bay. 567 page book.
-ma-kay-la- on 11 Aug 2010 at 10:50 pm #
Cool, I’ll look into that.
wheelgunner on 11 Aug 2010 at 11:03 pm #
Just look up Max Brooks torrent on google and you should get it.
-ma-kay-la- on 12 Aug 2010 at 12:29 am #
I tried that on my phone, it didn’t work that well. I’ll try it on somethin else if I can.
wheelgunner on 12 Aug 2010 at 12:39 am #
I keep forgettin about the phone part. Good job even getting on here.
-ma-kay-la- on 12 Aug 2010 at 2:02 am #
Damn, it didn’t work. Stupid phone. I don’t understand why the hell my mom wont get the internet. She has a new computer and two new laptops, yet she won’t bother to get high speed.
wheelgunner on 12 Aug 2010 at 11:32 am #
@ Freddex-I don’t understand the wiki link. He chose a Latin name for a plant species that kills people to name a virus after. They even share a few symptoms with the z-virus type.
On the bright side, the zombies from “28 days later”, and all other fast zombies for that matter, will not be fast for long.
if for no other reason, the muscle use required to run like that will shred the muscle fibers, and they won’t repair like your’s do when you rest. Namely, because they don’t rest. And if you really think that a slow, but impacable enemy isn’t scary, then you will have a LOT to learn in post-apocolyptia. It’s one of the things that real nightmares are made of.
@-ma-kay-la-Sorry bout the phone. I know how fustrating that gets. Wait, you can youtube with it, but can scroll through a book?
-ma-kay-la- on 12 Aug 2010 at 1:46 pm #
@ wheelgunner My phone is a smartphone so youtube is like an app that is built in, like myspace, facebook, twitter, and some games. But sometimes on other sites, it wont load completely. I’m shocked I can even get on this site. @ freddex I honestly don’t believe zombies are gonna be like the zombies in 28 days later or like the zombies in Dawn of the Dead at first. I believe that at first they will be kinda fast but will stagger around until they know how to use their legs completely. Then when they do they can run like us and other things until (kinda like wheelgunner said) they lose their capability of doing so because the muscle tissue rots away.

@-ma-kay-la-So much for your”smart”phone being smart, aye? You have a library you can go to? You can BS about a report or some such and keep your rep up.
wheelgunner on 12 Aug 2010 at 11:39 pm #
@-ma-kay-la-You know, with all the arguements we have had over anatomy and zombie fighting, you would think that more people would be jumping in to suppport or derail one of our thesis. Doc in particular seems to take great pleasure in these type of debates. Interesting.
Angryvikingman on 13 Aug 2010 at 12:20 am #
If you read back through all of the topics from day one, we really have torn everything down into such explicit detail, that some of us won’t comment on things because we have before and just hate repeating ourselves. I do that from time to time, but I’ll haul headlong into a mall ninja when they open their big fat mouth. We like to keep people around who are smart, or at least willing to learn.
wheelgunner on 13 Aug 2010 at 12:21 am #
I feel special.
Ronin666 on 13 Aug 2010 at 12:25 am #
not a huge Brooks fan. He has too much bad information, but of course being fiction the author is allowed to make his own rules for his universe. That’s why I write, it’s as close to being a god as I’ll ever get ! LOL
WWZ was better than the guide, I have them both in book form and audio books. The reader for Guide’s voice pisses me off so much I can’t listen to it, haven’t got around to listening to WWZ yet.
I tend to think zeds will start out as shamblers and get slower. Muscles depend on blood being pumped thru them and zeds hearts don’t work.
Running required far too much brain activity for a corpse controlled by a virus.
wheelgunner on 13 Aug 2010 at 12:40 am #
Have any of you read the comic?
-ma-kay-la- on 13 Aug 2010 at 12:50 am #
Yeah, my phone is stupid, and I still have a year until I can upgrade it so I’m stuck with it. I should stop complaining, I’m lucky to have a phone. Anyway, since I live on a farm about four miles out of town, the only time I can go to the library is when I’m at a friend’s house and since most of my friends are guys I can’t go to any of their houses. And I can’t go to my best friend’s house cus she got grounded. And about my rep, I don’t need to worry too much about it.
-ma-kay-la- on 13 Aug 2010 at 12:54 am #
@ wheelgunner Sorry, that comment was meant for earlier, my phone just now refreshed the page
wheelgunner on 13 Aug 2010 at 1:27 am #
Is all good. My phone is a haggard old boy I’ve had for three/four years now. It calls people sometimes, and I can text once in a blue moon. Your phone can take all the time it needs.
-ma-kay-la- on 13 Aug 2010 at 1:32 am #
LMFAO. Ever heard about upgrading?
-ma-kay-la- on 13 Aug 2010 at 1:36 am #
@ Ronin666 Good point, never thought about that, but I still think they’ll learn how to run, even they will have a little bit of intelligence before they are too decayed
wheelgunner on 13 Aug 2010 at 1:39 am #
@-ma-kay-la-My best freind went swimming with it and my best knife. Guess which one I got back broke.
-ma-kay-la- on 13 Aug 2010 at 1:54 am #
Wow, that sucks. I would of rather of had the knife considering my pocket knife is pretty shitty, I’m hoping my mom will give me one of the Winchester pocket knives.
wheelgunner on 13 Aug 2010 at 2:00 am #
Buck and Kershaw make excellent knives. I’ve had no luck with with Gerber. Winchester makes a fine gun, but if you want one as a replacement knife, you have my sympathies for how bad your current knife must be.
-ma-kay-la- on 13 Aug 2010 at 2:05 am #
Yeah, it’s practically like a butter knife. I’ve tried sharpening it, but it never works. I hoping the Winchester pocket knife will at least work for cutting the twine that gets tangled around your feet sometimes when you walk in the barnyard.
wheelgunner on 13 Aug 2010 at 2:10 am #
It should hold up to that. What are you using for sharpening?
-ma-kay-la- on 13 Aug 2010 at 2:22 am #
Im not sure, it’s something my mom buys for her knives, and its what my family uses to sharpen their knives with. Theirs turn out fine and sharp, but mine is pretty bad. I’ve had them try and sharpen it also but it seems to stay dull, it’s strange. I guess that’s what I get for buying something really shitty, but it was cheap and I figured it would work to cut the twine.
wheelgunner on 13 Aug 2010 at 2:23 am #
@-ma-kay-la-It took your phone four hours to reboot earlier.
wheelgunner on 13 Aug 2010 at 2:25 am #
I’ve had 8 Gerber knives like that. It sucks, and you can literally do nothing about it. Bad steel is bad steel.
-ma-kay-la- on 13 Aug 2010 at 2:42 am #
It didn’t take it that long to reboot, I was riding the fourwheeler and my phone was on that page about to comment before I put in my pocket. Four hours later I take my phone out of my pocket, realize I’m still on the internet, finish the comment I was typing then press submit comment and my phone refreshes the page to where it was currently at. BTW, I didn’t know Gerber made knives. Isn’t that the same brand that makes baby food?
wheelgunner on 13 Aug 2010 at 2:48 am #
I’ve been wondering that for years. They are in the same basic catagory as the Winchester you are wanting, in terms of how much wear and tear they will take.
-ma-kay-la- on 13 Aug 2010 at 3:04 am #
The last time I had a really good pocket knife, someone stole it. So I figure, get a crappy one no one would want but make sure it works for what I need it to work for. So far my plan has failed me.
wheelgunner on 13 Aug 2010 at 3:10 am #
Yes, it is a horrible plan. I recomend hunting down a lower end knife from kershaw or buck. If you manage to hang on to it, they will last for years. My friend has a Buck that he has been using for forty some odd years now, and it’s still sharp enough to shave. Almost worn down to nothing, but it will shave.
-ma-kay-la- on 13 Aug 2010 at 3:20 am #
Looks like I found a new pocket knife, or found out what brand to look for.
wheelgunner on 13 Aug 2010 at 10:24 am #
Buck actually designed the original lock blade knife. It’s the 110 model if you want a little peice of history. It’s heavy enough to kill a rabit, and sharp enough to skin it when you pull it back out.
Angryvikingman on 13 Aug 2010 at 1:02 pm #
I really like my little Gerber EVO Tanto. Its really light and flips open faster than just about any knife I’ve ever seen. Just wish it was all plain blade instead of partially serrated. It really limits the use of a small knife. One thing about Gerber knives, they don’t come with a very good edge on them, so you’ll have to resharpen it for a proper edge.
Kain - ZAC Weapon Consultant on 13 Aug 2010 at 2:03 pm #
Well, to jump quickly onto topic I had one of those calenders a few years ago. If you read the guide then there is nothing that you can get from the calender other than freaking out those around you.
Back off topic, don’t forget SOG knives. They are usually a pretty decent knife for the money, I’ve got about half a dozen in various forms. My favorite folder is their Trident, own two, one standard which is a great little blade, but I wore the thing to where the knife no long had any finish left on the pocket clip and and the tanto was calling to me at a local store. Currently I am carrying a SOG Trident tanto, came out of the wrapper sharp as hell, though I’d have liked a slightly beefier blade. The cord cutter is for the most part useless though. Personally for the money I like the blade, long enough to be used for self defense, short enough to justify everyday carry, as opposed to 3ID’s cold steel rajah, or what I like to call the pocket machete.
As far as other blades, Buck makes a damn good knife, I just don’t care for lock backs. No real reason, I just don’t, I guess I like the ones where I can open and close with one hand. And before someone decides I’m open game for the “strength” advantage of a lock back. If I need fixed blade strength then I’ll use a fixed blade.
If you are looking at ordering a knife online, lapolicegear has a 15% off sale and the 5.11 knives that they have are for the most part already half off, and the one that I have is damn fine quality, razor edge.

I have a SOG fusion tomahawk that has done me well as an all around ax. I prefer sheath knives, myself, but I have a brand new Buck 3 blade folder that came shaving sharp for $25.
McLuvin on 13 Aug 2010 at 5:19 pm #
Kain you are good to go. A quality liner lock is stronger than a back lock.
They also have the advantage of one handed opening and closing.
The Kershaws are great knives. You can also find good deals on the
cheaper spydercos if you shop around. My everyday knife is a Kershaw
leek with composite blade. I have some better knives but they are only
carried infrequently.
-ma-kay-la- on 13 Aug 2010 at 8:19 pm #
Gerber is the same brand that makes baby food. Strange.
McLuvin on 13 Aug 2010 at 10:26 pm #
Two vastly different companies. Gerber is the knife division of Fiskars that makes scissors and axes and such.
-ma-kay-la- on 13 Aug 2010 at 11:27 pm #
Ok, good. I was thinking it was strange for the same brand to make both hunting knives along with baby products.
Kain - ZAC Weapon Consultant on 14 Aug 2010 at 12:02 am #
Yeah, major difference there. Just because the name is the same doesn’t mean that the two are related. That would be like assuming that because I carry the name Kain that I’m related to the Biblical Cain, the father of murder and thus by association the son of murder. That would be a misnomer.
Though there are some manufactures out there that have a rather varied and strange product line. Look at BSA for example, everything from motorcycles to hunting products, and beyond. Granted they may be a jack of all trades their quality may be a tad lacking.

im gonna have to get me one of those

I’m probably going to hate myself for doing this, but if anyone reading this likes the Rambo knives, or the Expendables, and thinks any of those knives look usable, Gil Hibben makes all of them. Personally, I’d get five Cold Steel machetes, but it’s your call.
