Safe Houses Designed by the Professionals

How great would it be to have a zombie safe house designed by an architect, with all of the bells and whistles for the ultimate defense built it? Well fellow survivors, that is not too far of a stretch of the imagination.
We just got word of a “Zombie Safe House Competition” where several architects submitted their plans for the best safe house. To see all of the entries and to vote for your favorite, check out their official page here.
Which one do you like the best and why? How would you change up the plans?
Stay safe. Stay informed. Stay alive.

I still like the retrofitted missile silo with secure above ground complex. Use a dozer to build up a 10-12ft earth wall inside the fenceline. This gives you a nice firing platform and a secondary defensive perimeter if the fence fails. The above ground land would be big enough for gardens, windmills, and solar arrays. Silos have their own wells so water wouldn’t be an issue. Room for a well stocked armory and plenty of survivors. Other options could work too, but I like this one.

Well, given consideration from previous topics I have read (fortified boats being used as a defensive station during a Zombie Apocalypse), I believe that the best option would be the SS Huckleberry. The thought of using Zombie Sludge as a fuel is just hilarious!
It has everything that is needed for survival, and is completely mobile in the water. Although the thought of building one of these seems a little outrageous, it would probably be the best option to go with out of the four.

SS Huckleberry got my vote! I love the zombie diesel. I’ve never seen anyone else attempt to get any use out of the walking dead. And we know that gasoline will run out very soon. Zombie diesel not only helps eradicate the zombie menace, it is environmentally friendly.

I wouldn’t use any of those designs because there are so many flaws in them that they would be unusable and only get their users killed . It amazes me that some highly educated and intelligent people out there have almost no common sense .
1. z-pod
Your living in a one room metal box surrounded by another layer that pops up and blasts zombies with flamethrowers . Congratulations you just made a giant easy bake oven . The first time those flamethrowers start firing it is going to get extremely toasty in your big metal box and your box has air holes in it so if the fire doesn’t kill you the smoke from the burning zombies will or maybe the fuel you have stored in the walls will just ignite and explode . Also there are the touch activated chainsaws , what a brilliant idea , the only down sides are that you will need a huge supply of gas to run that many , they will gum up fast cutting through the zombies and the first time you brush up against your own wall you are a dead man . If you are going to use the z-pod you might as well stick a hand grenade in your mouth and pull the pin , it will be quicker and a far less painful way to die .
2. SS Huckleberry
This is the most thought out design but it is still a bad idea . You want to set up a mobile barge convoy on the mississippi river . Well the plan is going to have some major drawbacks . First the mississippi is fed by rivers all over the country and many of them have dams and locks to regulate the water flow . When things begin to fall apart the military and individuals will likely start blowing those dams and locks to flood the rivers and make it impossible for the zombies to cross . This will make it very hard for you to control your convoy when the river keeps getting flooded and is threating to sink your ship or beach it on a sandbar . Second there are plenty of bridges spanning the river that would likely get blown as well . So that would restrict the area you could travel along as well and the first time you hit one of these submerged bridges you will likely punch a hole in the bottom of your boat . Third you will have a limited supply of fuel and you will need zombies to make more fuel . Not only would you be exposing your convoy to possibly being boarded by zombies when you try to make fuel but you would have a hard time getting the other supplies to make it after a while and you would likely use it faster than you could make it .
3. Mountain Getaway
This thing has some serious flaws . First a hot air balloon that could lift your house would need to be the size of the goodyear blimp at least . Second you are going to have a very hard time tunneling through the mountain to make any traps or rooms , you could spend your entire life there and not make that many tunnels . Second when it came time to escape , your giant hot air balloon would already have to be inflated in your spiked lined pit , I couldn’t possibly imagine what could go wrong there . For a normal hot air balloon it can take a team of people fifteen minutes to inflate their balloon , you may not have that much time , your balloon is alot bigger and you are inflating it by yourself . Also when you try to take off the balloon could easily be blown into the spikes on the sides of your pit and when it pops you will fall onto the spikes in the bottom of the pit . Third getting away by sail boat will not be as easy as this guy thinks . You will run into one big problem when you try to sail your big @#$ boat down this twisting mountain river , that problem is rocks , most rivers have them and you will find that out real quick . Navigating any river can be dangerous and it would be nearly impossible in this guys sail boat which is not meant for the twisting rivers that you often find in mountains . It would be hard enough just to get down the river in a kayak .
4. Sears Roebuck 003-b
This isn’t even a zombie survival structure , its an idea for a zombie survival structure . You would go someplace and set up this kit house you had ordered in advance . Pretty much you would be building a house from scratch with an instruction guide and pre cut boards which would be more work and take more time than modifying an existing structure . The guy really didn’t even have a basic design . Personally I think that this one should not have been listed with the other three because this does not even have a design to it .

Well thought out response Bear. I agree with you on almost every count.
CompShooter on 12 Nov 2010 at 9:25 pm #
I agree with McLuvin, deactivated silos can be had for the right price and seen some on TV that have been turned into a residence. And or it could be happened upon such as Day by day armagedon. It would have the great makings of a static defence which in this case probably the only time I would agree with a static defence but considering the enemy…. Making fuel from infected sludge = you becoming an undead captain. I cant imagine handling the hazardous materials throughout the process and not get infected at some point,. Hot air balloons are subject to air currents. chances are the undead will have most of all the real estate from coast to coast. LOL touch activated chainsaws?? ever have a two stroke engine fire up after days/weeks or even several hours and run fill speed cold and with no choke? (assuming they are gas)

there just cargo containers on stilts anyone can get hold of them and throw them together…
Semper Cogitant on 14 Nov 2010 at 10:37 pm #
I love the huckleberry, and the name. The right thing for the job.
I’m really kind of ashamed that I didn’t think of zombie biodiesel, A zombie rendering plant on a barge is a wonderful idea. Messy work though, want to wear full hazmat gear for that job.
Not sure I’d want it on the Mississippi with hurricanes and all, especially with no weather service to track them for you and give warning. I suppose you could head north for the entire hurricane season though. Here on the Puget Sound I think this set up would work well. You could also go up the inside passage with this set up. You’d want to stay out of the straights during heavy weather though.
The farm is a must and easy to set up, I’m kind of ashamed I haven’t thought of a small farm on a barge, it seems so obvious now, it’ll have to be part of my long term plan. Getting the soil aboard would be hard work though.
I might add another barge for vehicle and a workshop, maybe a small helipad if a pilot was in the group. Also towers like you see on some tugs and fishing vessels to extend lookout range.

The ss huckleberry had some great original ideas, however, zombie biodeisal is retarded. Take that away and the barge ideas are sound. I would put them to use in that situation, but only different. 1st I would find a sand or gravel or any kind of loading station to get my soil with heavy equipment. 2nd I like the cargo container idea, but why worry about stilts. If zombies did get aboard u r done if u can’t kill them off. Considering the food storage and farming staitions are on another barge entirely. I would think small 3 storage container and only one barge is enough. 3rd I would have a cellar under the soil for the food storage. That will dramatically increase its shelf life. Along with that I woul have my armory and grernhouses all next to my main shelter. Not as I said before on a whole different boat. 4th most important I agree with the. Mississippi being stupid. I would ideally be on a river in the midwest heavily anchored, or a lake heavilly anchored with a paddle powered blow up raft as my main shoreparty vessel. I would have a motor that powers it on my stationary barge to be used only in the case of situational fubar. 5th I would build a windmill to turn an alternater to charge my 12 to 18 car batteries dasiey chained (discovery channel season 2 colony). The power would be mostly for comfort and moral. (This would be constructed last, my expensive idea is to use solar panels to power my xbox 360 so I could practice killing walkers in red dead undead nightmare.) But in an ideal situation zombies could easily be processed into bio deisal and cargo containers can stand up on toothpicks for no reason ( why not climb on top of them with their built in ladder). 6th I would have a watchtower mainly to look out for human raiders. For this reason I would build a 5ft wall of sandbags two deep with razor wire across the top. All the way around the perimeter.
MY RECOMENDATIONS.
I think everyone should consider stocking up on 22 lr shells. At least 10000 rounds. They will be enough to kill the undead 100 yards away on the shore. This would be done strictly for entertainment. I would try and build a wall out of their remains just by making their corpses fall just right. On the other hand 20000 zombies would show up not allowing shoreparties, but giving any wouldbe raiders a run for their money.
Stock up on mayday foodbars they last 5 years. This would keep u alive while the crops grow. Also farming isn’t enough one must also raise livestock, or rely on fishing for meat year round. I recommend rabbits. Just pin off the area not used for farming and let them eat the weeds/grass that will inevitably grow from the top soil.
Also I didn’t mention a tug boat at all earlier. I would definately have to have one to even get my floating island to my marina/harbor. I would keep it attached and ready just in case, but I reccomend never using it
johnny z on 17 Nov 2010 at 2:12 pm #
Oops. I made it sound like a 22 will conquer all lol. I meant use this in the watchtower to entertain or to pick off any zombies visible before going ashore. I own .357 and .44 magnum brush rifles and side arms. Knock down power is your friend when in close quarter combat with geekz. If u are getting surrounded, and need more time to line up a head shotblow off a leg. This will slow them down long enough to issue the kill. Of course don’t waste ammo if u don’t have to. If u r john rambo do a 360 firing all killshots, but for the average joe a 3ft by 2ft target is easier to hit while moving than a 6in by 6in kill. For this reason carry large caliber arms with u ashore. A 22 is quieter also not echoeing off in all directions sounding a dinnerbell for miles. So shoot from the barge with the 22 this will attract the zombies in the area to shore, but not the zombies 3miles away. If a shore party is neccesary start pick to off the zombies in the morning on day one continue to kill on site throughout the day, go to sleep then on day two kill any that gathered throughout the night. Then go ashore. This should clear out the surrounding areas for your shore party. Stay sharp for late arrivals though.

Take it from a man who lives almost on top of it, the Mississippi is a mean enough bitch without zombies and apocolipses messing it up. It’s never under control, one slip in the current and you’re dead, and the amount of zed deisel you would need to fight those currents would be stupid. Plus, without humans constantly meddling with it, or any watrer source for that matter, it would fill up with debris and alter course. The last time it did that it devistated entire sections of the country that had depended on it to support them.

well there are unused farming silos all over the contry, the old concrete ones… I’d put a turret on top of one of those, and a catwalk around it, where if I had to I could come out and shoot straight down at the door. Having a few thin glass bottles of gasoline would be nice too, they could be used as molotov cocktails, or thrown and them shot with tracer or incendiary ammo.
Most are tall enough to have three or more floors built into them, and although they would not be very large, even with 3 floors, they would be very secure structures as far as zombies are concerned, and could probably be bought cheap. Another idea might be to make them more fuel efficient by hiring a spray on expanding foam contractorr cover them with foam, and them seal it with spray on elastomeric rubber. Wood heat would also work well here as no one could get to the top of yuour chimney to plug it up, and as the pipe passed thru each level it would heat it.
I can think of a dozen perks right off the top of my head to keep improving on the idea. The last one I will throw out, is a double barrier of triplestandard concertina fencing with a kill zone between them, effectively giving you three zones of protection/ killing fields

im new here but i have got to say that i was going to make my house out of storage containers.. i just have to get that one out.. cause hell i dont care how old i get i will be ready at all times.. and i think everyone here should do the same..

I would grab lots of melee weapons and lots of foood and barricade my self and other survivours into a supermarket which would work for a while till the food runs out,i would then get lots of fetile soil and make a large soil bed in the middle of the supermarket and plant fruit seeds and trees and stuff like that..

I figure cool climates would really slow-em down – Canada. MTO (Ministry of Transportation Ontario) have yards full of serious multiple auger type truck mounted snow blowers that can crushe hard ice and throw it into dump trucks. Just herd them into empty Wal-Mart parking lots, send in the snow plows, send the zombie sludge off site, try to render it into some form of petroleum product. No one should need to touch any thing by hand. The best defense is a good offense.
johnny z on 09 Apr 2011 at 5:53 pm #
The best defense is a good offense against raiders. Don’t get me wrong everyone has a right to theor own opinion. That being said I believe that it is a risk of few precious survivors every time they leave the safety of a compound. Barricade yourself on my version of the huckleberry and let the sombies surround the shore. Stay safe and use the army of zombies to deter raiders. Wait the zombies out. Let em rot and feed on would be attackers.

i would find a costco distrupution warehouse there already have a medium security setup , normally in the middle of bum fuck egypt , heavy roller doors , big mac trucks you would just have to do some reinforcing . digging pits , setting traps , trip wire you could have signs posted for survivors (coz zombies cant read right) costco pretty much sells everything and the distruption warehouse would be fully stocked with cars , fuel , food to feed a big population for years , medicine , shit they even sell firearms , are stocked with hardware tools , generators , furniture/beds . they sell plenty of clothes .
i no for a fact there is one of these places in illinois

I live I Ohio so I’m really close to lake Erie so my idea would be to gather up about say 4bargss conect them in a sguare pattren and then go about say 1000to 2000 yards of shoren and ancohr down then fill 2 barges with dirt one for growing one for live stock such ass chikens cows and piggs then build watch towers on all four sides of the barge raft then on the other 2 barges but shipping containers that would work ass housing and somewere on the vessel have a small helipad having owned 3 helicopters myself “. Then I would stack concrete slabs on the SIDS of the vesel to act as wall then on Amy open ares
put solar panels on each tower put 50.cal emplacd guns that can cover a full 360″ angels then have small rafts to make trips to shore (if need be) I would have myself my family and my closet friends and there familiys and my private mlitary company that I own on the vessel with me being that my private military company is the size of a small town of ahoy a hundred people I would have about 50 staitioned on board and 50 holding out secure postions on the docks gaurding the docks aginst walkers by doing this I have no possibilty of an infftio. Ofcuring on the vessel is u were to ask now I wold stop infecess frm getying abode alln all people entering the vessel will have to serve a 72 hour qurantine to stop raiders my pmc will do most of the fighting thay will also have sampler boats around in the to patrol for swimming walkers of raiders. At night there would be light and defence will be doublesd since zombies move more at night anyway and for when the lake ices over we will have snow mobles to make supplay runs I will also have seprae other bates conected to the vessle for things such as storage waste and water purrification That is how I will survive z day or world warZ or however thag will call it when the dead eat the living. Will survvenwhybth rest of u fools get eaten die of assimilated into the horde
