Zombies Are Coming: Fit to fight
Obviously some of us get out and exercise more than others, but to what extent do you need to go to be fit enough to survive? Can you run a mile non stop? Can you run it in under 8 minutes? Can you do 50 push ups? 100? What about nutrition? How much food will you need to eat when you’re constantly running for your life?
When you’re doing everything by hand, carrying everything on your back, and constantly on the move you’re going to burn between 2500 and 5000 calories per day. That means your food intake is going to have to go way up. The up shot is, if you’re fat, you’re going to get skinny, assuming you survive that long. The down side is, where are you going to find food to maintain that kind of calorie intake? You’re going to have to learn and work your ass off.
What we want to do here is put together a fitness routine to help people who aren’t “Fit to Fight” get into fighting shape, and to help those who are fit stay in fighting shape. We don’t want any derogatory comments about overweight people. Lets do the right thing and try to help. Below in the comments section, follow the format listed.

Nickname: Angryvikingman
Height: 6 ft 2 inches
Weight: Ummm……. 385lbs
Fitness Level: Between So-so and not good, closer to not good.
Target Weight: 240-250lbs (When I was 250, I wore size 36 and they were loose on me, and god was I ripped. Well, you could see my abs.)
Fitness Goal: To be able to run a mile in under 8 minutes, do 100 push ups, and fit into my old club clothes that my wife keeps threatening to throw away.
If any of you have seen my youtube videos, you know I’m NOT a small fella, but I can pick up and haul anything smaller than a Mini Cooper. I may not be able to out run you over a distance, but I can work a full day non-stop at a harder pace than most others can endure. Its really only in the last 5 years that I’ve developed a weight problem, and over the last year I’ve managed to put on 100lbs. Mainly due to the fact that my wife got pregnant and I was the one who had the cravings and did all the eating. I know its all my fault, and now I’m taking steps to fix it. I’ve been using my dumbells at home that sat in a box for 2 years, and I started running again today. For those of you who are friends on facebook, you can follow my running via the RunKeeper app. (If you want to be friends on FB, just email me and I’ll send you details.)

best things are to train the core. cardio’s never much of an issue for me since after a day I adapt to running pretty much any distance.
so…. here is… the Gladiator workout. (nice name huh?)
every day, here’s what you need to do. Widearm Pushups, situps, diamond pushups, one armed pushups, handstand pushups, chinups, rows and practice with a melee weapon.
for pushups I usually use the widearms to double for a cardio as they allow you do do many pushups in succession and I’ll time myself to try and complete as many pushups in 2 minutes as possible. situps are best when doing hanging situps suspended froma chinup bar, they work your entire abdominal area. diamond pushups work your triceps and shoulders. one armed pushups develop strength in your lats and shoulders, chin ups develop back strength and practice with your designated melee weapon, either through kata or beating a tire develops your forearms and entire core in addition to increasing your proficiency with a weapon that never runs out of ammo.
reps are entirely up to you, I never set a number and just do as many as feels right. and yes those are all bodyweight excercises. very important for hand to hand combat and endurance. If you can lift yourself repeatedly while not under stress, with adrenaline you can manhandle someone twice your size.

oh, and my specs- Reaver
5′ 8″ 135 lbs
target weight- irrelevant, I move up and down ten pounds depending on my eating habits over the past day.
fitness level- good
I rock climb, swim, practice MMA and swordfight
fitness goal, don’t really have one. I’m comfortable where I am and I adapt very quickly to whatever level of physical activity is neccessary.
Angryvikingman on 28 Jul 2011 at 8:53 pm #
Yeah, I did the Gladiator workout from “Men’s Health” magazine one time and I was sore for 3 days, and I seriously halfassed it. When I get back into “better” shape, I’ll try it again.

lol, I made that workout up and that name was at the top of my head. and I didn’t read your article thouroughly so I misinterpreted it as us coming up with workouts and naming them.

Nickname: Semper Cogitant
Height: 6’2″
Weight: 280#
Fitness Level: Not good. I’m strong as my work involves lifting people regularly, including quite large people. But just this past weekend an easy hike with my kid (4 miles out, then 4 back, very little elevation gain) really kicked by behind.
Target Weight: 220# would be perfect. at 24 I weighed 210 or 220 and did a mile long foot pursuit and was still able to win a fight after the run. That was my best shape.
Fitness Goal: I guess the army fitness minimums would be a good goal. For me that would be:
30 Push ups (I can do only 10 or 12 now)
32 Sit ups (Maybe 15 now)
2 miles in 18:42 (I can maybe do a quarter mile at a jog, 2 miles at a brisk walk, probably a little over 20 minutes)
What should I do to get there? I should be getting off my behind and going to the Y, and also trying to run at the school track or dust off my bike and ride a few miles now and again, I used to love to do that. Also, and this is the hard part, eat a salad instead of a burger every now and then. Maybe the best way would be to go back to martial arts, maybe at my kids TKD school (I did Shotokan karate long ago), but that costs too much for now.

Weight 180-182 in summer 187-189 winter I hate snow so I only go outside if I have to or hunting. That’s why the weight gain , Especially when I have 4 bolts , 6 screws and a plate in my hip. I am constantly walking in the tool and die shop where I work on molds and fabricate machines etc. and stay active outside in summer because with that type of injury if you cave in to the bad days, its a downward spiral.
Overall fitness is more towards so so as far as upper body strength. I would like to drop 8 -10 lbs if you believe the new gov stds. I M supposed to be 154 on the low end and 174 on the high end but I’m confortable at my weight in general. Size 34 jeans, medium shirts. I do like my home brew IPA beers though. So a little bit of a gut. But no dunlop disease. That is really where I need improvement but seems like I get so far then plateau out. I have hereditary cholesterol problems but controlled, same with blood pressure. I eat pretty healthy but do what I want on the weekends. I can jog a mile easy enough but run a mile in 8 minutes flat out? Hmm probably , haven’t done that in a long time but I constantly jog up the stairs at work several times a day to get to a storage area.I live in a rual area an bike a 4 mile ” block” in 20 minutes, Doc says that’s good time. And mostly flat ground. I can do 50 pushups max in one rep. As far as calorie intake, under that kind of stress and exertion I figure your going to need about 5000 cals a day maybe more at least until you reach a safe area. Part of my food storage is MRE entrees for grab n go situations.
Age 47. I know it wasn’t on the list but sorta relevant I feel in this circumstance and I never had a prob telling people anyways.

fitness goal: eventually get down to that weight.
Been doing stuff like the 100 burpie work out and some various workouts I have pulled from insanity and p90x. make some up on my own as well, unfortunately i need to start focusing on cardio so i can loose lbs. trying not to bulk up too much…
@ Semper Cogitant
The minimums for the army apft is 41 pu, 51 su, and 2 miles in 1636. granted this is for a 27 year old. one thing i found that works for pu is planks, lifting light weights lotsa reps, and throwing a medicine ball up 50+ times in one sitting. try working different parts of the chest as well. start with close hand then change to normal then finish with wide arm. for the su try using a resistance band and do sit ups with said resistance. it WILL hurt like hell, but, you will see fast results. for the run, try doing sprints, and using a jog for your rest stride. on a track try springing the straightaways and jogging the turns. it will take about 2 weeks but you will see your times go down. if you have any more fitness questions you can email me at redneckjeeper7@aol.com

Target Weight:200 by end of tour, mid january. i don’t think this will be a problem, I’m only eating 1 1/2 MREs a day. I won’t touch the T-rats here, seems the Mess Sgt never heard of field sanitation* that mess tent is an invitation to an E. coli outbreak.
Fitness Goal: 2 miles in 16 minutes, 5 pull ups, 50 pushups, 100 sit ups then score 15 out of 30 head shots off hand at 50 meters. I call it the zombie pentathlon. Maybe you could host that at the next zactac Viking.
* good idea for an article there. “field sanitation after the zompocalypse” How much would it suck to survive the fall of man and then get dysentery

NickName: Patrick
Height: 5’8″
Weight: 140
Fitness Level: Good
Target Weight: 146 (putting on a couple pounds of raw zombie-slaying muscle would be good)
Target Goal: Run a mile in 8 minutes or less (right now I can walk really fast all day long but can only run a few hundred yards).
Crank out 100 pushups (right now I can do about 20)
I’m also going to start practicing martial arts a bit more aggressively. Right now I’m kinda’ slacking; throwing a hundred punches a day, some light taichi and qi-gong, nothing that would directly help take out a zombie horde.
Thanks for the extra motivation, Viking. I’m looking forward to checking in on everyone’s progress.
Have a good one, everybody,

I need to lose some weight and start exercising some more , but I already know that I will never be setting any speed records for running due to a LOT of joint damage . That comes from being worked like a slave since I was old enough to stand up . I can travel long distances across rough country on foot without resting much .
I may weigh a lot but most of it is muscle , believe it or not , I’m a welder so I spend all day on my feet and I move around a bunch of heavy steel by hand . I come from a long line of really big , really strong people , more than a few of my relatives have had to be buried in piano crates because they were to big for coffins .

@ RedneckJeeper – The number I quoted are for my age, 46. Thanks for the info.
@ If you want traditional you’re stuck with building one probably. However, the goal is just to get air moving, and it doesn’t really matter how you do that. A hair drier as mentioned above, or really any sort of fan and some tubing will work. It just won;t look as cool as a bellows made of wood and leather.

@ wheelgunner: Depending on the size of your forge, you can use a blow drier or a shop vac with the hose on the exhaust port.
@bigbear Yeah, lots of big people in my family too. My uncle nathan is 6’3″ and he was about 400lbs and I’ve seen him lift stuff that I wouldn’t even attempt, and I can lift a Mini Cooper. Of course he is built BIG, his hands look like a bunch of bananas. Lol. I was worked like a farm animal from when I was a child until adulthood as well. My friend Jake L. calls me “Ox”. It is hard getting back into exercising for fitness after being away from it for so long, trust me. I ran/jogged about 3/4 of a mile and my legs were on fire. There was a time I could run for 90 minutes non-stop and I was nearly 300 lbs then. (I played football, baseball, and soccer in high school) Just get it in your mind and keep at it and it gets easier everyday. (After the soreness goes away. LOL!)

My great grandfather on my dads side of the family was a friggin behemoth . This guy was just a little over 6 feet tall but he was as wide as he was tall . He used to plow his fields with a horse drawn plow and whenever the ground was so soft that the horses would get stuck he would actually pick them up one at a time and carry them to firmer ground so they wouldn’t break a leg . One idiot made the huge mistake of insulting his wife and he calmly walked back to the guys truck and when he wouldn’t get out he reached down with one hand and grabbed the frame along the bottom of the truck and flipped the truck over onto its roof .

Target weight: it’s good now
Goals: I’m pretty strong, and I can fill out most my shirts, but I’d like to put on a bit more muscle. Eat less, food will be rationed, and I’m putting down over 3000 calories a day. I want to be a better pistol shooter. I have good accuracy, I just need to pull off the shots faster.
At the moment, I can do some serious running (I’m doing 25 miles/day in this humid hellhole called our capital), lifting isn’t much of an issue. I’m a good swimmer, and I can swim a mile without too much effort. I do quite a bit of triathlons, and some marathons. I also have a first-class PFT and want to maintain my fitness level at that.
I do martial arts. I occasionally practice MCMAP with my brother (also a Marine), I do Krav Maga and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
@wheelgunner What kind of smithing are you trying to do. I occasionally do some aluminum sand-casting. I use a blowdryer to keep a steady stream of air into some charcoal.

Marine Corps Martial Arts Program.
If you’re out of shape, and want to start a martial art, the Tai Chi is your best inroad. When you get to where you can do the routine(s), then you can speed them up to increase the workout. Then you can add a Gim Sword to the routine as well.

trying to lose weight at 12 isn’t a good idea like he said. your weight will stabilize at a good spot if you just exercise a lot and eat well.
QAZZY 1-9th on 31 Jul 2011 at 11:23 am #
On Reaver’s point, your ideal weight as a teenager would be based on exercise and a good diet. If you have body fat, focus on losing that (not too much, don’t develop eating problems), and replacing with muscle. As a teenager, don’t focus too much on a low-calorie diet, since you’ll be emptying the fridge for food. Don’t fill up with junk food, but don’t diet either.

I have good knives, including a Kabar, which is amazing, and a MORK bowie that I can cut down a large sappling and still shave with, but I am a melee fighter like yall are fist. I need proper equiptment, and have wasted more on trying to find good weapons for it than I have on fifteen firearms and accessories. I NEED armor, but that’s a seperate skill set, but I NEED the sharpened steel to even worry about armor. I could probably write a post on all the problems I’ve had over the past couple of years. It’s stupid. I think that I’ve run through over twenty different companies, and I literally cannot afford to buy a twenty grand custom sword. And without weapons to work with, I have nothing but the time to learn how to make them. Besides, if I get any good at it, what’s wrong with having an armory of custom blades?
QAZZY 1-9th on 31 Jul 2011 at 1:19 pm #

hey wheelgunner, what type of melee weapons are you after? I’ve been researching and buying this stuff for years so I might be able to help.
wheelgunner on 31 Jul 2011 at 6:18 pm #
@Reaver-If it kills, I’ll try it once. I would honestly love to try at least one version of every weapon before I die.
Reaver on 31 Jul 2011 at 6:30 pm #
well it all depends on what you’re trying to kill. for zombies I would use either impact weapons such as clubs, staffs, axes, flails, maces, kukris or the like, or slashing weapons such as katanas, scimtars, calvalry sabers (questionable effectiveness), bastard swords, claymores or tulwars. (for a slashing weapon a curved blade is better as the blades angle of entry provides less resistance to the cut for a longer length of time). for fighting an unarmed human, same as above. for dueling an armed human I would take either a normal spear or naginata if the size of your weapon wasn’t an inconvenience, or a rapier if it was.
wheelgunner on 31 Jul 2011 at 8:41 pm #
I have found a certain affinity for the spear, but I want to be able to kill anything that comes at me. I am a military history guy, so pick a place and a time period, or a scenario, and I’m trying to do that. Just a bit expansive.
QAZZY 1-9th on 31 Jul 2011 at 8:48 pm #
I have a pretty hardcore affinity for the spear. It’s similar to a bayonet, so I know how to use it well, and it’s pretty versatile. It’s pretty much my melee weapon of choice.
Ideally, I’d have a spear, for most melee engagements. A tomahawk for close combat. And a knife for sneaking up on individuals, and last resort situations.
Reaver on 31 Jul 2011 at 10:06 pm #
spears are excellent for melee, though I’d be reluctant to use them in a zombie apocalypse scenario since the penetration damage might not destroy enough of the brain to drop a Zed. though if you use one of about Asegai length it could easily double as a staff and an impact weapon.
wheelgunner on 31 Jul 2011 at 10:35 pm #
Standard length for a spear throughout history is 6 inches taller than you are. Use them as spears, not staffs, please. You’ll kill yourself otherwise.
Reaver on 31 Jul 2011 at 10:38 pm #
yeah, that’s why I said Assegai. there’s longer versions of course, but one variant is 3 to 4 feet long.

I’m a US Army Infantry Platoon Sergeant with 12 yrs in active service. This website was created by two enlisted from my last Battalion in the 3RD ID during OIF V. Thought it was funny, kept logging on once in a while for laughs.
I’m in Ft Bragg at the 82nd, in charge of 35 Hooahs.
The Army is getting downright selective about who gets in and stays in now, not like 5 yrs ago. If your’e doing drugs, overweight or have a criminal record, UCMJ, your’e not getting in or staying in for long.
Alright, I’ll play your game-
I’m 5’9″ tall, 180 lbs ; 17% bodyfat
Pushups- about 80 in 2 minutes
Situps- same
Run- I can run 2 miles in 14:30 and a 5 miler in a little less than 40 minutes
We run roughly 5 miles m,w,f.
tuesdays are for upper body and abs
thursday are foot march with 40lb pack, armor, vest and weapon- anywhere from 8 to 12 miles ( 12 mile satndard is less than 3 hrs with 80 lbs total gear weight)
The younger guys, believe it or not, have a tougher time with pt. A combination of lack of conditioning due to age and a lifetime of sitting and playing videogames ( a generational disease).
Iv’e put out my name here before, so I’m not posing. The military isn’t rocket science, but alot of guys that DO have military experience exagerate because they have a complex or lack of esteem for the job they really did and want to sound like they are in the SEALS or such.
I listen to guys tell crazy stories about deployments all the time. A cook will go over, serve honorably and do his job well. Then he comes back and friends ask him if he killed anyone and gets thanked for his service. He doesn’t want to tell people he didn’t see action and never even saw the enemy. Thus, he begins telling lies. Before you know it, he’s a one man army, a scout sniper/recon/seal/pj/ranger with a green beret. Jesus, what’s wrong with just telling the truth?
The reason alot of you guys meet vets that can’t shoot is that they lied to you, quite often. Plain as that. Same thing for their physical fitness. Plus, military fighting skill such as tactics and firearms proficiency are perishable skills. Some guys just slack when they get out. A guy who’s been in college since he got out will dull, obviously, versus a guy who gets paid to do this everyday.
QAZZY 1-9th on 01 Aug 2011 at 1:45 pm #
Combat skills really are something you need to keep constantly honed. You can’t expect to sit around and have your skills stay in tip-top shape. Your body and mind need maintenance and practice.

Thats the way it has been for years. People want to be looked up to by others and tend to exaggerate. People want to be like the heroes that they know which, as of lately, are military figures or fight bad guys. Also who is going to question a soldier who has been fighting overseas? I have a couple friends over there and if one of them came back and told me a story I’m not just going to say they’re lying, even if it doesnt sound true. Yeah I’ve heard some warstories but alot of them are probably just soldier’s stories. That doesnt mean I’m going to call them liars.
I see where you are coming from and I agree but mainly the reason people do this is because they can and they know not many people will question it, not much else to it.

Whew! Just got in. Ran 1.10 miles. Took like 19 min, but hey, I still did it, and I feel like I probably could have done more. Thats a damn site better than the .68 miles I did the other day in 13 minutes.
Anyone else have fitness updates? Lets try and not derail the topic ok?

@AVM: I’m not shy. That was sarcasm directly related to post #44.
HMPlatinum
Age: 45
Height: 6′ 2″
Weight: 240#
fitness level: so-so
My legs are muscular and thick (not RLS, but I bounce, a lot, at my sitdown job) but my upper body strength has waned from my days of hauling hay, loading wood, scrapping, and being in the USMC.
Target Weight: Back in the day, the USMC said I should weigh no more than 219# at 6’2″, and that seemed a good weight for me. I couldn’t build up too much muscle (I’m HEAVY) and I had to avoid too many brewski’s and steaks. I (and my knees) would be a lot happier without the extra 20 pounds.
Fitness Goal: Back in the day (again), a perfect score on the PFT (Physical Fitness Test) that we Misguided Children took was 80 situps in 2 min, 20 pull-ups (no kipping), and an age-based scale for a three-mile run (100 points for 19 min at 18-19 years, 22 or 23 min for a 24 year old, maybe 27-28 for 30+…it’s been a while). I’d like to ace the old PFT. Once I was whipped into shape at MCRD, I had no problem with 80/20, but running has always kicked my arse. My best time was at age 23 and just under 22 minutes for 3 miles. I’d like to match that (dream big). 100 push-ups (or more, and NO, not over 100 days) would be nice, too.
My biggest issue: Motivation. I could list my medical problems, kid problems, wife issues, this issue, that issue, flat feet (not really), and all kinds of whining, but it boils down to this. Motivation, getting off my butt and doing it.
Angryvikingman on 01 Aug 2011 at 10:45 pm #
Yeah, I had a hard time getting motivated myself. Then I got inspired to write this article and get offa my ass. I was 285 when I played football and soccer in highschool. I had a 4.9 second 40 yard sprint, and once upon a time I ran 1.5 miles in 7 min 47 seconds. I played tackle in football, and midfield in soccer. The line does the least running, and the midfield does the most. I started and finished every game I ever played in. Being a farm hand from the age of 5, weights from football and running from soccer made me some kind of athletic mutant, and when I finally got down to about 240, I might have been at 10% body fat. Now, sadly, I’m probably listing somewhere in the 30-35% range. I know I’m severly out of shape, but even being as bad as I am, I can still out last people who are supposedly in shape and at their target weight. Standards of fitness are skewed, and generally wrong. Once upon a time when I considered joining the military, and we all went up to Ft. Campbell and did the Airborne Assault Training Course (Yeah, over/under, barbwire crawl, the team tower, slide for life…ect, I did it all.) I did way better than half my friends and I was “Morbidly Obese” according to the MEPS Doctors.
At any rate, I digress…. Yeah, I remember now… Yeah, I’m doing something about it now. So, Meh.
3-15 INF on 02 Aug 2011 at 8:46 am #
Good job Viking! Keep it up- results don’t come right away, but the more you have to lose, the quicker it comes.
From the latest fitness opinions, interval training, where you vary your speed from slow to sprint and back again works better than constant plodding in weight loss. The body doesn’t get used to the work.
i bet it would take you 6 months at most to reach your goal if you stick to it.
QAZZY 1-9th on 02 Aug 2011 at 10:38 am #
Motivation by far is the hardest part of staying or getting fit, especially during the winter.
Viking, something that may help if you want to lose weight is looking at a picture of yourself at your athletic prime, and aiming towards that. Then once you start dropping the pounds, look at yourself at your worst and motivate yourself to stay away from that.
But we’re adults, and getting older doesn’t help with fitness.
QAZZY 1-9th on 02 Aug 2011 at 6:26 pm #
I think we need to have a new fantasy loadout article. Some of the comments were ridiculous, and it’s amazingly funny to read.
If I had a dollar for every time I heard Desert Eagle, .44 Magnum or 25mm Bushmaster on an APC.
Someone wanted a .44 Colt Python, and another person wanted to put a green laser on an L96 for close quarters.

I was lazy, hit the gym. I forgot how much easier running is in a treadmill. I still suck at weightlifting (for my height/weight), so I hit the pool. Apparently it’s the hottest it’s been in D.C. for a very long time.
And yet people still form a 1-block line for cupcakes.
Angryvikingman on 04 Aug 2011 at 6:36 pm #
HA! I know thats right! Well, I shaved a little bit off my mile today. I thought I would have taken off more time, because I ran/jogged more than last time, but I only managed to shave off like 4 seconds. Probably because I carried my CZ and its 2lbs loaded and I was carrying an extra mag. Had some trouble with dogs last time, so I left the knife and took my gun, almost had to use it. Maybe I can meet in the middle and take my kukri next time and shave off a few more seconds.

Yeah, well the road is public domain and if their dogs chase me in the road then I have every right to shoot them. I’ll post the top 2 results tonight, I promise.
QAZZY 1-9th on 05 Aug 2011 at 10:47 am #
I don’t run with a gun, mostly because I can’t. D.C. voids my concealed carry license. And Arlington, I carry a knife. I can take on, and beat most people I encounter, and a gun isn’t quite comfortable to run with.
The shadier parts of Arlington call for a gun though…
I’ve had to break a dog’s neck before, but that was awhile ago, and it was public domain.
Reaver on 05 Aug 2011 at 12:54 pm #
yeah, if they attack you you have every right to defend yourself. It’s just never come up with me since every time a dog chases me I stop and get to know it. then the neighbors get pissed because their dogs keep following me home every time I run by their house. haha
QAZZY 1-9th on 05 Aug 2011 at 4:01 pm #
Well, the dog clamped down on my calf, I have a right to snap it’s neck.
Speaking of animals and fitness, I think it would expend a lot less energy to have a donkey or mule to carry most of your stuff (still have a knife on you, and your rifle slung) while you move, and have it follow you (leash it).
CompShooter on 05 Aug 2011 at 9:57 pm #
Good idea but I think a mountain bike and one of those towable child carriers would be better. Animals don’t seem to fair well with zeds, they spook easy or sometimes just refuse to move. And bikes don’t need to be fed and if needed could be abandoned and recovered later but able to grab your combat loadout first. The Japs and VC used them extensively in different eras of warfare with success.
QAZZY 1-9th on 05 Aug 2011 at 11:21 pm #
But with a mountain bike, especially with a carrier, you’re pretty limited as to where you can go. I’ve seen pack animals being led in places where you wouldn’t dream of bringing a bike.
But I think in most areas, it’s more practical to use a bike, especially on long-distance roads.
And with the proper bikes, like the VC, you can lift some pretty heavy stuff. My Vietnamese mother knows a guy that did that during the war.

I just went to the texas gun and knife show in abilene today . Man what a bunch of #&$*ing crooks . Almost all their guns were way overpriced . Some of these guys wanted three grand for an ar-15 that you can get at any hunting store , gun store or pawn shop for just over a thousand dollars . They were selling some single barrel break open shotguns for around 600 dollars that you can pick up in any pawn shop for about 150 dollars . One guy was selling some 22. bolt action rifles for around 800 dollars and yet I saw the same rifles in academy recently going for around 200 or 250 . Also some of these guns weren’t even complete . One guy was trying to sell an ar for a 1000 dollars and it was missing the upper receiver and barrel . And some of the older guns looked like some one had grinded off just enough of the rust to make them sellable .
P.S. Anybody know of any sites that sell put it together yourself gun kits for various guns .
Angryvikingman on 06 Aug 2011 at 3:40 pm #
Sounds like a bunch of BS to me BigBear! Yeah, I’m tired of getting robbed at gun shows and gun stores. I’ve decided that I’m going to get my own FFL. Hell, maybe even a class 3 FFL. They sell kits that guarantee approval, and tell you how to sweet talk the ATF agent during the face to face interview. I’m also considering getting incorporated or doing an LLC beforehand to protect myself from any potential financial liability. If I get approved for an FFL, then I can go to a bank and get a small business loan so I can keep a small amount of stock on hand.
As for kits… well, those are few and far between. The government in its infinite wisdom kinda put the Kibosh on that a couple years back. You can still get the kits, but you have to buy a new receiver as the original one has been torch cut. Now, for an AR-15 or AK-47, you can get new receivers easily, but for just about anything else, its hard. You can find flat stampings for some HK stuff like the MP5, 91, 93, 11, and 21E, but you have to buy the trunion, and then bend the flat and weld in the trunion, and if its not done just right, then you wasted like $500. Let me know what you’re looking for and I can probably point you in the right direction.
Oh yeah, didn’t run today, stupid rain and lightning…. If it was just rain then I woulda done it.

I’ve been trained in hand-to-hand combat, Sword-fighting (Real deal not that fencing shenanigans), and Have actually created Training regiments for myself, with help from an older friend of mine who is a marine. I must admit I was taught how to box at a young age, though as I got older I got into drugs and trouble with the law. So I’ve gotten WAY out of shape, though I am decently strong. Just have a lot of fat in my core, and some in my thighs. I smoke about a pack a day so thats not helping my cardio at all, but Im in the process of trying to quit. I dont like being over-weight at all, reason being why I dont want any on my body period. I can do around 45-50 situps in a one minute session, about 30-35 push-ups, and can run a mile in about 9-10 minutes. So-so, not acceptable, atleast by my standards. Anothe old friend who was in the U.S Army, is in the process of teaching me Hapkido, BJJ, and Ninjutsu by another close friend. As you can see I have got a lot of knowledge, but so much more to learn. I just hope with me doing all up these different routines I can get into amazing shap and be able to adapt to any physical task, and being very versatile at my combat techniques.

3k for a AR? Hope it was made of gold (well you get the point ). I just came back from a show with a new rock river lower for 156 out the door. I checked their web site they are 170 today . He bought these last year but didn’t raise the prices . I travel across the state to several shows several times a year and I find that the shows in larger cities are pricey compared to the small town prices. But often enough I can find better prices elsewhere. My advice is research the firearm etc. you ate interested in regarding price be it online and or local gun shops. Then you have a better idea what its worth. Hell…I found better prices on 22 ammo at a local dept store than at a gun show. Also I go through a entire show before I make a purchase unless I know they are in line on price.

Nice job, Viking.
Over that period of time, 1:30 off is very impressive. What is your target for eventual mile time?
Came back from the Shenandoah. Met an old friend that happens to own a .50 BMG. Shot a watermelon at 1,200 yards after two tries. A cold bore shot is pretty difficult for me.
I can’t get the same accuracy with my .300 Win Mag Remi 700, but I still love it.
Angryvikingman on 08 Aug 2011 at 6:46 pm #
My target is to finish a mile in 8 minutes or under. Right now, I’m halfway there. If I can manage to shave off a minute a week, well, I’ll be there in 2 months. Right now I’m running about 1.10 miles just because its that far to a landmark and back. I run and walk it. I try to bust out the first quarter mile at a slow run, and then alternate between walking and running at every telephone pole. They’re about 60-80 yards apart. Soon as it cools down a little I’ll really start pushing myself and run 2 and walk 1, then after a while, it’ll be a slow run the whole way, then eventually it will be a brisk run the whole way. I’m trying to build my stamina and not just run till I have to stop then sit on the side of the road heaving and hacking trying to breathe. Thats not effective, I’m trying to keep moving at a certain pace.
QAZZY 1-9th on 08 Aug 2011 at 6:56 pm #
Well I hope you get there, 8 minutes is pretty impressive. Try a treadmill though, if you can. It’s easier to set and keep a pace, and the lower impact is really great. It also seems like you’re trying to build endurance, so also swim laps.
Swimming actually made me a better runner, and helped me beat asthma as a kid.
Angryvikingman on 08 Aug 2011 at 8:13 pm #
Well I don’t want to join a gym at the moment. I’d rather road run a known distance so I can push myself to the finish.
QAZZY 1-9th on 08 Aug 2011 at 8:37 pm #
I guess. Road running is also a great way to experience the outdoors. Once you get your endurance level up, try running a shaded trail for 2+ miles. It’s really great.
Go for endurance first though, not speed.
Angryvikingman on 08 Aug 2011 at 8:55 pm #
I’m also building my endurance to the heat. I’m sure that by the time I hit 8 min per mile, I’ll be able to do 3 miles at least at a nonstop jog.
QAZZY 1-9th on 08 Aug 2011 at 9:51 pm #
Well, once you get there, change your name to Angryironman, if you can lift the back of a Cooper, you got more grunt than me.
Angryvikingman on 10 Aug 2011 at 6:16 pm #
Lol, yeah, I can lift a Mini Cooper. A friend of mine suggested that I start doing those strongman competitions, but you actually have to train for those. Besides, Marius Pudzianowski could probably still beat me if he was 75 and only had one leg.
Ran today, and figured something out. Even though I hit a mile on my run keeper, the time per mile keeps going, so if I ran 1.13 miles, then my time kept going for that .13 miles. That very well could mean that I did it faster than I thought. next time, I’m gonna have to set the timer so it stops at a mile so I can see my true time for a mile, and not add 45 seconds onto it while I’m dragging my big ass back into the yard.

With jumping and vaults and what not, parkour puts you at a much higher risk for injury. I’m a bit too big to do much more than vaults now, but as a teen, leg injuries weren’t uncommon.
But parkour shouldn’t be counted out to quickly overcome obstacles.

off topic question here, which AK47 variants are considered good quality? manufacturers really. there’s a gun store near my house with racks of different models ranging from the $350 range to around $700 and I’m not sure which ones are best.
big bear29 on 13 Aug 2011 at 12:29 am #
There are so many AK knock-offs , variants and modernized versions that it could be a topic in of itself . Its seems like each former communist country makes its own version of the AK and has at least half a dozen variants of each of these guns . Plus there are a ton of guns that were influenced by the AKs design . My suggestion is that you make sure that it is an actual AK 47 and then find out who made this type of gun and what variants it has .
McLuvin on 13 Aug 2011 at 8:51 am #
Stay away from anything built on a century receiver or a WASR. If you can afford one Arsenal is top notch. For zombies you would be better off with an AK74. The 5.45 round is lighter so you can carry more ammo.
No matter what AK you end up with, don’t expect headshots at great distance. The platform is not designed for precision.
wheelgunner on 13 Aug 2011 at 11:35 am #
Nope. Not designed for distance at all. Where are you going to find 5.45 rounds?
QAZZY 1-9th on 13 Aug 2011 at 12:12 pm #
I would go with a 5.56 chambered AK compatible with STANAG mags for ammunition availability.
McLuvin on 13 Aug 2011 at 1:26 pm #
Any place that sells 7.62×39 will sell 5.45 as well. You can bulk order from multiple web stores. It’s not hard to find.
McLuvin on 13 Aug 2011 at 1:31 pm #
If you want a 5.56 you might as well get an AR. They are much more accurate and just as reliable. You’d be surprised how many AK failures there are. In a recent Larry Vickers AK class he made the comment that he had more AKs go down in that class than he has ever had ARs go down. ARs have come a long way in the last half century. I’ll stick with them.
QAZZY 1-9th on 13 Aug 2011 at 2:00 pm #
Exactly! ARs really aren’t as unreliable as people say they are! They’ve been watching too much TV-BS, and should pick one up. If you don’t outright abuse it, and give it regular maintenance like you should to ANY gun, it won’t fail. There’s a reason why many militaries around the world use some form or another of the AR.

Paradox
I am 22 and am in the army.
Height: 6 ft
Weight: 165
Currently I can run two miles in 14:20
I do 60 or so PU in 2 Minutes and 70-80 SU in 2 Minutes
I think that the main thing that people need to think about is not Push ups and Sit ups. Cardio and running is going to be the most important thing, but not just running in a straight line or on a road that you have been running on for years. One of the best things I have found it to try and find trails or parks near where you live and run something that you have never ran before.
I love playing basketball for cardio work out. It keeps you moving and changing direction constantly so it strengthens your ankles, hips, and knees. Now i know that some people cant play basketball or similar sports because of injuries but it is all about finding something that you enjoy and that works for you.
Any of the other readers who are in the army know that the army is changing their physical fitness test and standards because they finally realised that some one may be able to do 100 PU in 2 minutes but that does not mean they are strong it just means that they can do 100 PU. If your talking about being physically fit for Z-Day then think practically. what are the odds that you are going to run for 2 miles straight….slim if you can sprint half a mile and outrun anything (or anyone) chasing you.
QAZZY 1-9th on 13 Aug 2011 at 10:44 pm #
Good point on the half mile, but the point of having the endurance for 3+ miles is so you won’t be crapped out afterwards. To be a Scout Sniper, I had to have a first-class PFT.
There’s a lot of slow movement and stealth, so what’s the point of running 3 miles in a bit under 18 minutes? It’s just in case I need to.
Reaver on 14 Aug 2011 at 8:43 pm #
I was kind of turned off of AR’s by a very weird problem we had with a colt a while ago. the gun was driving the bullet against the inside of the receiver and forcing the slug back into the casing and was taking chips off the lip of the magazine. it was jamming every 3 shots or so. AK’s are just supposed to be durable, fairly cheap, and accurate enough to serve most tactical purposes.
QAZZY 1-9th on 14 Aug 2011 at 9:08 pm #
Why would you get a Colt? They only get government contracts because of politics! The good ARs are from H&K, Bushmaster and I hear DPMS and Panther Arms are good (anyone please correct me if I’m wrong).
McLuvin on 14 Aug 2011 at 11:42 pm #
I’ll agree that Colt is overrated, but DPMS/Panther and Bushmaster aren’t in the same league as H&K. Having said that, you don’t need a super high end gun to get the job done. H&K, LWRC, POF, LCW, etc all make exceptional weapons. They have Build quality that puts cheaper guns to shame in some ways. The fit and finish is superb. However, for the average person, you don’t need a flawless finish. You just need a gun that runs reliably. I prefer to stay in the lower/mid level of the AR spectrum. My rifle of choice is Rock River. They are reliable, accurate, and reasonably priced. I put them a step above Bushmaster and DPMS, but below the premium brands.
If any of you are shopping for ARs don’t get caught up in the Mil-Spec BS. Remember that those specs were decided by a committee of bureaucrats 50+ years ago.

I love my Stag. I only ever had problems with steel cased ammo it always had problems with FTF.
QAZZY 1-9th on 15 Aug 2011 at 8:30 am #
I love my Bushmaster XM15. I do occasionally have to clear jams, but it’s not a big deal, takes a few seconds and I’m back in no time. The XM15 was used as a sniper rifle by the Beltway sniper, and through its accuracy, I can see why.
McLuvin on 15 Aug 2011 at 9:31 am #
The Stag is on par with the Rock River. Steel cased ammo is generally junk so I wouldn’t worry about jams with it.
The shots made by the “Beltway Sniper” were hardly sniper shots. ARs are usually pretty accurate though. Try some hornady or federal match ammo with a decent scope mounted. Mine was ridiculously accurate with handloads and a Nikon 4.5-14. I prefer a bolt gun for distance though.
QAZZY 1-9th on 15 Aug 2011 at 11:05 am #
Actually, with proper match parts on both, the semi-automatic M21 is just as accurate as the bolt-action M24.
That said, I’d still take my left-hand synthetic Remington 700. I’ve got the TacOps bolt knob, Snowy Mountain muzzle brake, Harris bipod, McMillian A5 stock and Leupold Mk4 8.5-25x50mm scope. I think the capability to zoom to 25 was really worth the cost.
They were hardly sniper shots, but definitely marksman. The media now portrays anyone with a scoped rifle making precision shots as a sniper.
Angryvikingman on 15 Aug 2011 at 11:48 am #
The idiots in the media consider anything over 50 yards that whas fired with a scope a sniper shot. The media are all retarded over programmed robots who think anyone with a gun that isnt a cop should be put in jail. Don’t even get me started on that mess.
Reaver on 15 Aug 2011 at 8:37 pm #
they also believe that semi automatic weapons can be considered assault weapons, and that pistol grips are found only on weapons designed to kill people.

Okay, okay. The media is retarded, but they’re not all anti-gun. Goddamn politicians from both sides really are retarded though.
wheelgunner on 18 Aug 2011 at 12:38 am #
And they have been since politics went from a duty to a career. It only atracts a certain class of person, and only a certain subclass of those can trick you into putting up with them while making them rich at your bidding.
QAZZY 1-9th on 18 Aug 2011 at 1:02 am #
If I were shipping out Congress to fight, we wouldn’t be in war.
wheelgunner on 18 Aug 2011 at 9:47 am #
We’d also be short a congress. Draft dodging would suddenly become legal.
QAZZY 1-9th on 18 Aug 2011 at 10:49 am #
Personally, I just hate that there is next to no diversityin politics. It just seems like old white men can properly represent everyone in America, and they know everything.
Klaryn on 21 Aug 2011 at 8:32 pm #
Nickname: Klaryn
Height: Between 4’9 and 4’11. It changes.
Weight: 114
Fitness Level: Between so-so and not good. I don’t exercise, but I don’t really need to. Used to when I was younger.
Target Weight: Doctor says I should be around 140 for my height and age group, but I don’t believe that and am perfectly happy with my weight. For now.
Fitness Goal: Don’t really have one, though, if it counts, I do have a goal of learning to use a gun and all gun models, namely rifles or quick-fire guns.
I’m 15 P:
I’m excellent with many types of melee weapons, taught myself and know what I’m comfortable handling. I’m actually the most agile in my family, and strongest, next to my dad. I have a quick hand too, and pretty sneaky. I have plenty more to put here, but I doubt any of it is relevant in surviving. Like moving silent and plotting out a building from one visit.
Reaver on 21 Aug 2011 at 10:46 pm #
your height changes? I don’t think changing shoes counts.
QAZZY 1-9th on 21 Aug 2011 at 10:56 pm #
Just saying, for a 15-year-old, regardless of gender, under 5’4″ is pretty short. Use your height to your advantage and learn parkour/gymnastics and run. If you want to survive, a so-so to not good fitness level will have you dead.
Klaryn on 22 Aug 2011 at 8:03 pm #
@Reaver
Thank you for your ‘feedback’, but the doctors kind of require me to take off my shoes before they check my height. I don’t measure myself.
@Qazzy
My entire family is short. I’ve actually taken a great interest in parkour and have been in gymnastics since I was really little. Perhaps I should have mentioned gymnastics. I don’t know what the average ‘fit’ person looks like, which is why I say ‘between so-so and not good’. I don’t even really know, but I take a guess since I don’t hold myself very high. I have a 6-pack if that helps anything XD don’t think so though.
QAZZY 1-9th on 22 Aug 2011 at 8:12 pm #
Well, in two minutes, how many situps or pushups can you do, how many pullups can you do, how much can you bench, and how fast do you run 1 mile?
Drink your milk, eat your Wheaties and spinach, you gotta put on the inches. Are you sure it’s 4, not 5? I didn’t grow up near giants, but that height was the norm in 6th grade. Damn.

Nickname:Silent walker
Height:5’7
Weight:172
body fat:7.8%
Fitness Level: well rugged
Fitness Strategy: I Start off with 3 different styles of chin ups, normals, slows, and reverse grips, then I go to Handstand pushups, one armed push ups, leaping tiger push ups,and jumping push ups, for cardio i sprint steep hills for 20 mins up and down 10-15 times, I then go on to taking a large peice of 4×4 wood and practice repetitive kendo movements with controled movement and hard strokes, i also use cynder blocks for a weight bearing excercise instead of normal weights because of the shape and awkardness of them to hold.
ive trained myself in stealth tatics and evasion manuvers,I have also done fencing, swimming, boxing, and isolation excercises (which i remind you arent good for survival),
The tatic of learning how to shift your body weight from one leg to another in a crouch and learning how to keep silent in my mind is vital for a situation like this, considering zombies are very attracted to noises, breathing, gunshots, screams, etc, I have learned about strifeing and ninjitsu style of crawls, out in the open these moves may not be effective, but lets say you are low on supplies, there are houses that are abandoned and possibly have small zombie infestations, the tactic of being able to enter the house with subtle movements without detection of the zombie would be very vital in situation of retriveing supplies.
Klaryn on 22 Aug 2011 at 10:11 pm #
Well hell. If that’s all it takes, I should be in good shape. If I look in a mirror, my body looks basically like that woman’s, only a little more at my hips. Surprising. I never thought that I was in good shape XD
I’m pretty sure I’m not 5’9-5’11. :/ those people seem to tower over me. Tall people are scary! I have no idea of my times in anything. I never ask. With my instructors, it’s don’t ask, don’t tell. I love milk and spinach. I don’t recall having Wheaties for a while though. P: Do those really affect height? I thought they only made you healthier.
Reaver on 22 Aug 2011 at 10:21 pm #
calcium is good to ingest as it’s important for strong bones. so cheese is also a good option if you like that. Gina Carano is definitely a good role model for pretty much any girl or even a guy. successful MMA fighter, actress and one of the most beautiful women alive. not much to hate.
McLuvin on 22 Aug 2011 at 11:39 pm #
Who could hate Gina Carano. I also highly doubt a fifteen year old is built like her.
QAZZY 1-9th on 22 Aug 2011 at 11:42 pm #
I love Gina Carano! My god, she’s amazing. Older than me though :/ but not by much. But her body shape is ideal for these purposes, most female Marines I know are built like her.
Like what Reaver said, it’s best to find a compromise between strength and agility. Not too much weightlifting*, but maybe pull ups (you can buy a $20 bar that drops on your door, I’m addicted to mine), and running for the endurance to supplement that agility.
Wheaties alone don’t necessarily make you shoot up, but a good diet will. Eat your diary, vegetables and lean meat. You are what you eat, and eating crap will have you growing horizontally, not vertically. are you by any chance Asian? I own the Asian side of my family tends to hit growth spurts later, and the American-born children tend to grow quite a lot taller than their parents due to a better diet.
*Note: you don’t want to be putting too much stress on growing bones. Take it very easy on the lifting, and pull ups with changing your grip should be the better way to bulk up your arms.

I don’t care what you believe and what you don’t. I’m saying that by the picture, my body looks like hers. I’m not saying I’m built exactly like her.

I’m actually a mix between Polish and German. German on mom’s side, Polish on dad’s. I’ve been wanting one of those bars for a while but nobody will get one for me and since I don’t have my learners permit yet and my parents won’t drive me anywhere, I can’t exactly get a job to buy my own…
You should see some of the kids where I live. American, hispanic, whatever they are, they are short and fluffed. It’s like watching a bunch of over-stuffed teddy bears stumble around…. All my guys friends are quite tall and scrawny though… P:

Fitness Level: Good. I do Jump cardio everyday and also practice with my bo staff all the time. I spar against friends 2 days out of the week. And do parkour in cooler months. Oct-Jan. I love to swim and do that when ever i can. I love the treadmill but, i tend to get used to it and then i don’t get much out of my workout. I run for 3 hours when i go on it and get around 3 miles. After i get that far and try doing i everyday i don’t feel the burn anymore and try another workout i am no used too.
Target Weight:180-165
Fitness Goal: i want to exercise 3 times a day 4 days a week. Hard to do when i get really sore for most of my workouts. i tend to get lazy after the second day of being sore. i stick to my bo staff and katanas for the rest of the week to give my legs time to stop hurting.

By the way… you aren’t one of those people who think ‘girl+interest in guy things+acts more guyish than girlish=lesbian’ are you? Those people are creepy…
I was born in Florida, but now live in NM. A lot of tiny skinny girls but more of the opposite. Huge guys and girls. I miss Florida P: desert is such a change from humidity.
@Reaver
Yup. I doubt I would be looking at Gina Carano’s picture to compare bodies if I was a guy. That would just be… wrong.
I took this name on for everything online a year ago when I came up with it for a character in a story I wrote.

nah, it’s cool if you’re interested in that stuff. most of my girl friends are in ROTC or competitive sports. And believe me that dry heat is a lot better than normal humidity. in Florida and most coastal areas you have sea breezes that keep the air moving and feel great. in places like Georgia, the humidity just…. sits. it sucks.

@Klayrn I don’t judge, most my friends are women, and most women I know from the Corps are like that. Your height now makes a bit more sense.
@Reaver The humidity sits in D.C. too. Fortunately I’m now in Jacksonville.
Any of you live it up in the East Coast and experience the quake? I unfortunately missed it because I was on a boat. You land lubbers could hopefully tell me about it.

I was pretty sure Klaryn was a girl, but I’m kind of wondering about Saku. Normally women don’t specify that they wear women’s pants. We might have a genuine 5’7″, 265lb., twin katana swinging, parkour running, cross dresser.

I guess it did some permanent damage to my lungs because my legs can take the running just fine, my lungs won’t let me make it past the first block. I hope that there is a way to train my lungs to not try and kill me.
-Have stronger arms. I’ve always had very crappy arm strength and if I had to fight anything off it would be the death of me. That or figure out how to fight something off with my legs only.

My target weight is under 246 lbs. More like 210. I was told by my physician that anywhere in that range is acceptable. I am 6′ 1″ and am in bad shape. I experienced a hip replacement in January. I suffered severe achilles tendonitis in August BUT am relatively healthy now. I must admit, I do very little to exercise. I work in a high stress, sedintary job. I try to do floor exerciese regularly but fail to do so far too often. I suffer from hypertension and weigh in at a significant 280 lbs. HELP.

Nickname: Let’s go with Chuck on that.
Height: 71″
Weight: 195
Fitness Level: Good
Target Weight: 180 I’m an Army cadet, graduating soon, and the Army wants me to get down to 185. My whole family has a muscular build, so it’s been tough, as I have averaged 205 for the past 3 years, but I’m steadily getting closer.
Fitness Goal: Max my PT test. I can max pushups, I need 5 more situps to max, but my problem is the run. Max for me is 13:00, and I run a 15:10 as of the last test. However, I have found that weighted sprints will not only leave you exhausted, but they burn fat like crazy, build your leg muscles, and most importantly they cut your run time drastically. I do need a new vest though, mine is leaking little pellets all over my car…
To anyone trying to get back to Army minimums, I have a couple of tips that helped me out. First, pushups can be done anywhere and anytime. If you find yourself just watching TV, drop and do a set of 15 to 20 on every commercial break. The same can be said for situps. Also, before you go to bed, try doing 3 sets of 15 to 20 pushups (more or less if needed). If you need situp work, a friend of mine recommended doing 4 sets of 35 situps as fast as possible without any supports for your legs. Give that a shot, and lower or raise the number as needed. Hope this helps guys!

First off, i apalogize for misspellings as my fingers type faster than i think and tend to be dislexic ^//^
I’m fresh outta high school and about to start my second semester in college, my major being culinary arts. Tell you why in a minute. I can shoot 12 guage, 4.10 and 22 rifles with >80% accuracey, though I’m not very good with a hand gun. I know for zombie, we probably want something with a bit mor powere but i have yet to have access to any. In high school, i believe my sophmore year, my best time for the mile “run” was just over 11 minutes. For the governement fitness we did every semester, i’ve always fallen just barely short of the standard average for my age in the sit ups, push ups, crunches yadda yadda. odd thing is, as i found out in my marine tech class i took my junior year in high school and a week long river rafting and hiking trip i did that fallowing summer, i can definately pack. Pack as in travel with a moderate weight (though i don’t usually need to pack that heavy) back pack long distances. the longest hike we did was 15 miles in about 4 hours. In all honesty, i’m never in the front of the group, usually lagging in the back but i have never been later than 4 or 5 minutes before the arrival of our transport back.
Marine tech is a boating and emergencey survival class in Alaska. We learn survival techniques, how to identifye possible hazards and to conduct basic medical aid, though i am able to perform a little more than basic, i am not licenced fot that. We have done a couple over night trips that we are driven a few miles out of town, dropped off or have to ‘abandon ship’ make our way to land, through some of the woods and make camp in small groups, even got to dig and sleep in snow caves. That was fun. The logest bike ride i’ve done was 17 miles, if you know anything about Alaska, then you might know how long it is rafting from Macarthy to Cordova on the copper river, the hike trail from Valdez to Shoop Bay, to which I have also kayaked, also kayaking from port Valdez to Old Valdez, and know we don’t live in igloos. Though they are fun to make as forts.
I make a point to know what to do in survival situations or and know how to deal without certain amenities. Coming from a home with money problems (yay failing economy that believes paper a paper dollar is worth more than a precious metal coin!), you learn to live without when your electricity is cut off and you run out of fuel to heat your trailer and moms food stamps were some how missing that month. I remember having tomatoe past on saltines with a sprinkle of oregano from our hardly used spice rack for dinner and was happy. Not because i was really hungry, but because i realized how something so satisfying could be made from the things most people i know dont think to put together for a meal. Saltine crackers : a simple water, flour and salt recipe.
Tomatoe paste from a small easily portable can. Oregano: an herb you can put in food for better flavor that is easy to find if you are aquainted with plants grown domestically or in the wild.
This is part of why i have taken up culinary arts as my major. Everybody needs to eat, no matter the situation and proper nourishment out of the simplest foods is an absolute must in survival situations. I am aquainted with healing herbs, alot of which grow right around my house, which i didnt realize for the longest time. Many medicinal herbs are found in the spice racks of common house hold kitchens. I figure with the knowledge i have and what i continue to learn, i can heal with food. Itr’s a two in one sorta thing and the best advice i have ever read would agree
“The more things that you have that serve for multiple purposes, the better.”
Anyone preparing for a zombie apocolypse would do well to remember those wise words. It’s not just being fit that you need to survive (though it is a pretty damn good chunk of what is needed when you’re booking your ass away from the brain eating mob.) I would aslo advise from my personal experience: know your area. Familiarize yourself with the plants, what is edible, none edible, medicinal or poisonous. Could poison kill a zombie? I wonder… You shoudl know how to properly prpare and administer these, both good and bad. Foxglove grows wild up here. It id deadly toxic but in extremely minute quantities, it is used in heart attck medicine(i don’t avise teting this for yourself as there are other means).
It wouldn’t hurt to know how to craft as well. You’ll need something to do to keep yourself together and sane when you aren’t on the look out for the undead or patrolling your perameter of whatever your base is. you can do pretty much anything with a knife.
so yeah, that my experience and advice…
