I wouldn't bother with special clothes. It's all about cardio. Running shoes, pants that are semi loose, dress for the weather. Heavy pack and weapons would get you eaten. You will need a mask if you get in close. The one on the picture would do.

Almost all guns come with a how to operate and the basics on what not to do and hit things, new in the box.

And check youtube. Everything except the exact sword review you are searching for can be found somewhere on youtube with proper phrasing.

@ Dragonbelle...go to a local gun range and take a coarse. Their trained staff will provide you with knowledge on how to properly handle firearms and how to use them and can provide you with a firearm if you do not own one. Dont be afraid to ask questions...thats how you learn.

Check at local army surplus stores, I've seen some at mine for a little less than you would pay new. Army/Navy online has some for around $100.

Oh, and private corporate armies, isn't that exactly what Blackwater and other "security consulting" firms basically are? There are mercenary companies everywhere, but they generally call themselves "consultants" and "security" companies, but many of them do pretty gruesome work sometimes.

Hey guys, been a while.

As far as protective gear goes, I think the things to consider is utility versus weight. Of course, utility is situational, if you want to protect yourself on a forage or a guerilla attack, you'd probably dress light, but if you were preparing for a large-scale attack, you might want heavier armor. Ballistic vests are graded in terms of how high calibre rounds it can resist, and they usually afford some protection against cqc. Practically speaking though, I don't think I'd wear any type of ballistic armor on my torso unless I was expecting people armed with small arms. Since I generally value mobility and agility over heavy protection, I think I'd just wear somewhat normal clothes, a good thick jacket with a comfortable snug t-shirt underneath, jeans or some sort of thick-ish cargo pants or khakis, and a sturdy pair of combat boots. Basically I'd just wear what I'd wear to a paintball game, or if I'm going backpacking. The snugness for me is somewhat important, so I don't get caught on things and move easier, so not completely tight, but just fitted well enough.

I'd definitely wear some kind of gloves, but my personal preference is that I feel awkward wearing full-fingered gloves. I prefer bike gloves for many things, I can feel trigger pressure fairly well if I'm using a gun, and it still protects my palms and in between my fingers, which is important in cqc. I'm looking into getting some sap gloves, gloves with weighted knuckles. A lot of cheap ones bust after a few punches, but a good pair would do a lot of damage, although I don't like the idea of going bare-handed against a zed, I imagine that it would probably still be more useful than a knife, less so than a machete. Wrist guards would be ideal, especially if using a melee weapon. It doesn't matter how strong a person is, the wrist is too weak for multiple blows, so reinforcing the wrist is key in a close combat. Ideally I'd want some sort of guard similar to Japanese tekou, extending to just below the elbow.

Face protection is probably ideal, especially if the disease is transmitted by blood. A ski mask or a paintball mask would probably be what I'd use, something with maximum visibility, and minimal protection.

A question: does anyone know where one might get a riot shield, or would we need to just scavenge these? I just think a riot shield would be useful sometimes.

(Marc) Motorcycle leathers are a good choice They have armor (plastic) in the sleeves and shoulder areas and knee and elbow pucks built in and the leather is tough. I know its just plastic armor but i dont think you could bite through it, its pretty tough stuff and its inside the leather. Gloves that also cover your wrists is a must. A good pair of comfortable boots you could run in to protect your ankles. Only downside is they can get pretty hot just wearing them let alone running and battling hordes of zombies, and they are a bit pricey. As far as neck and head protection, motorcycle helmets are a bit clumsy for running and dont give a real good field of view. Ill have to check on that snowboarding helmet and facemask you mentioned. The chainmail is a great idea for neck protection. Over all this you can still use your harness for molle gear, mag pouches, med kit and food. I have 2 six mag pouches for my AK 30rds. and 5 mag pouches for a 9mm 17rds. A 3L. camelback is great at keeping the weight centered and not sloshing around while your running. I have a gerber brush cutter for my machete...the thing is badass...its sharp and the blade is about 1/4 thick, its about the length of a large machete but the blade has a curve on the end and has MUCH better weight distribution. Ive cut through 5" bamboo like butter. I also have a large bowie knife although I would hope im never having to use just that to defend myself from the undead.

for a gun I think a Tactical .22lr is a real good choice. have a laser site and scope and you can plink them off from a good distance without making too much noise and attracting more, you have ahave a 30rnd mag and its a semi-auto, the ammo is cheap to stock up on, there is lots of it and you can carry a whole lot more on your person at one time. otherwise go with the same caliber as military and police. (after Obama and Hillary are done with our 2nd amandment rights the military are the only ones who will still have weapons and ammo)
I am leaning towards one of these for a "Machete" type weapon http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=963672&criteo=2&utm_source=Criteo&utm_medium=rmktg&utm_campaign=Banner%20Remarketing&utm_content=criteo2 I like the guard on the handle.

I just found this site today and was looking through some of the articles. I have been looking around and trying to figure out what I would wear lately and so far I think that a good close fitting leather motorcycle Jacket and pants with Armor would be the best thing. and I have been debating one with removable armor so I could replace with steel plates to stop bullets from non infected which I think will be just as much or worse to deal with than the zombies. or just maybe a bullet proof vest under the jacket. there are also Kevlar riding gloves that go a few inches up the wrist and over the jacket cuff and I would want to wear those more than regular Mechanix gloves which dont really provide much wrist protection. For a helmet/mask I want something light but good enough to take some abuse so I found a nice Snowboarding helmet with facemask. http://www.ruroc.com/store/1/rg-1/core/black/ plus it looks pretty badass. and for boots I want something that feels like a pair of sneakers. I like the Adidas and there are a few others that are real nice.
