Just are just getting home from a long shift at work.  Tired, and ready to relax, you pull your car into the garage and hit the button to close the garage door.  In the rear view mirror, you can see that the door appears to not be going all the way down, but not going back up either.  Growling and groaning noises become louder and louder.  As you hop out of the car you see an arm, still moving, of one of the undead that has been caught in the track of the garage door, causing it to remain in an half closed position.  A few more hands and arms, and even a head of the undead begins to appear through the opening.

You are at a theme park and its summer.  It is crowded.  It is hot.  Did we mention it was crowded?  You are in line with your family and/or friends and it looks to be about a 15 to 20 minute wait to get up to the front of the line, which is also wrapped well around behind you.  Leaving you in the middle with nothing to do but people watch, you hear what you think are screams in the distance.  Most are unaware as they write this off to be associated with the theme park.  However, your senses are tuned in differently.  You pause, and while you hear those around you talking you are focused more on the noises around you.  The screams begin to get louder and louder.  All of a sudden, several of the undead break into a portion of the line, about 30 feet from you, biting and killing any and all they can get their hands on.  Panic ensues and the screams are now all around as the blood splatters everywhere.

It’s been one month since Z-Day began, and you’re beginning to realize that, as prepared as you were, you can’t do it alone.  Supplies are running low and sleep deprivation is setting in.  The television and radio stations are dead, but you’ve been in contact with a few other survivors via Ham radio.  One is a surgeon, one is a mechanic, another is a retired sheriff’s deputy, and the last is a farmer.  The doctor has admitted to having a drinking problem, the mechanic says he’s disabled, but doesn’t say how, the deputy has a heart condition, and the farmer has a wife who is seven months pregnant.  Each is within ten miles of your fortification, each has a useful skill and experience in a branch of the armed services, but each has a potentially lethal defect, should you take them in.  There is room in your bunker for four.  Whom, if any, do you invite? When the chips are down, who do you choose?

We have talked and talked about how to prepare, what to do when the zombies arrive, and how best to survive.  These scenarios have challenged us to think about what we would do in different situations, often times limited with what is around us.  However, what about a situation where you are not so limited?  Imagine the outbreak happens and you find yourself in the fortunate position of being at your home (or other prepared location) which you have previously readied for the tides of darkness.  Reinforced doors and windows, supplies, weapons, first aid, and various other items are at your disposal.  You are in a pretty secured place and unless a large mass of the undead begins an attack, you should be able to hold out.

So what’s the catch you ask?  Well, that is just it.  How long do you hold up?  When do you venture out?  How do you communicate?  How do you stay sane?  You can prepare your home all you wish for the outbreak but what happens when it arrives?  Will you just sit back and wait for rescue, word of the end of the outbreak, or will you get stir crazy and venture out?

This scenario involves you at your predefined zombie defense location.  You might be at your home, work, or alternate location and had previously fortified where you are.  Due to the large number of the undead that have gathered around and the elevated level of the outbreak conditions, the doors, windows, baracades, and locks are no longer holding.  The undead start spilling in, wobbling toward you, moaning and hissing.  Most exits appear to be either blocked or have a substantial number of the undead approaching.

This scenario involves your home and those in it.  For this discussion, you find yourself asleep in bed.  It is the middle of the night.  Odd sounds can be heard from outside the house.  Sounds you immediately recognize as the moans of the undead.  As you get out of bed, your mind is racing as to what to do.  Sirens can be heard in the distance.  You look out of the nearest window and can see several of the undead, but are not sure as to how large the threat is.  Do you go mobile?  Is your home ready for a long-term stand-off?  Are there others you need to worry about inside your home?  Are you in an upstairs apartment or ranch style home surrounded by woods?  This scenario should really help get the wheels turning in regards to how prepared your home is in addition to how quickly you could put your plan into action, especially in the middle of the night.

The scenario is simple: you are at a supermarket/grocery store type facility.  There is a large single entrance with automatic doors. About halfway through shopping, and just as you hit the magazine isle, screams from the front of the store echo throughout the building.  You hear crashing, fighting, and breaking glass.  Leaving your cart you lean out from the isle and see an employee and a few customers fighting 2 of the undead.  Without knowing how many more are outside, being inside with no firearm, you start to formulate your plan.  What do you do next?

As I have been traveling lately, and enjoying a nice break from reality, I thought quite a bit about each location and how my defensive and offensive plan totally changes with each place.  Recently, I found myself in a movie theater with my wife, and while the theater I was in was not packed full of people, I found myself wondering, “What would I do if this place was suddenly found to be infected with the undead?”

This scenario deals with a movie theater, though it would also apply to similar venues involving large numbers of people.  You are sitting in the movie and hear what you immediately recognize to be the sounds of the undead.  They make their way into your theater, though only few in number, you do not know how many await outside the doors.  You have your significant other with you and no firearm on your person.
